per Judd:
The Gophers were no-shows on Saturday and appeared uninterested in figuring out a way to remain in the game. Pitino fielded a few questions about his players’ poor body language during his postgame press conference and he didn’t bother to dispute them.
More bothersome than the Gophers’ struggles on offense, was there seeming lack of interest in playing defense. Northwestern held a six-point lead at halftime and proceeded to outscore the Gophers 45-26 in the second half. The Wildcats shot 65.2 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and hit on 54.4 percent of their three pointers.
The Gophers looked helpless and clueless.
Those preaching patience are certain to point out that we simply need to wait until next year. Things will get better, they tell us. Led by Hopkins High School star Amir Coffey, Pitino reportedly has his best recruiting class coming. Reggie Lynch, a 6-foot-10 center, also will help after sitting out this season as a transfer.
This all might be true but the pressure on this recruiting class, along with a guy like Lynch, is going to be enormous.
How quickly can things be turned around? How long will the mantra remain, “Wait until next season”?
The Gophers will have a full-time athletic director by the time the 2016-17 season opens and that person isn’t likely to want to hear excuses, especially if Williams Arena remains full of empty seats and boosters have to give thought about opening their wallets.
That means that while Pitino’s job isn’t currently in jeopardy, expectations will be much different a year from now and, if the results aren’t, a change could be coming.
