Punishment is to miss Minnesota Game, only 1 game. Back for road game at Illinois with a "wink wink" you don't just get back starting job unless our O is struggling and we will put you back in.
Oh and when you aren't going to be around campus anymore, we will strip you of your Summer 2016 scholarship.

Way to use this as a "teaching" moment. Perhaps a few more games, keep your scholarship and get an education would be more appropriate.

Instead it is close to a $7500 fine.....

Another example of the fraud Urban the Disciplinarian.

Yeah. This feels weird. I get the suspension, that makes sense.

A "fine" for a student athlete seems weird though. Genuinely wondering, would a math scholarship individual lose theirs for a DWI? Is there any kind of universal policy there?

He did suspend the guy for an entire conference game as opposed to the old Badger form of discipline which involved suspending guys for non-conf games or other things like that. According to the story it doesn't sound like Meyer had to discipline him at all per school policy.

A scholarship is not guaranteed. If you do something this stupid, you will be punished. I am guessing if he would only have been suspended one game, many would complain it isn't enough.

Best solution, don't drink and drive! How hard is that?

If you can have 18 DUI's in MN and still be driving, why would one think that a D1 football coach would set the example?

He had no choice in the one game per school policy - no doubt.

I agree Scholarship's are earned, and not guaranteed - however doesn't it seem a little pathetic from a guy who is a "teacher of young men" to say - we will glady take your services if we need them to win a national title this year - but after WE win because of your performance and you go the NFL - the summer semester is on your new NFL dollar.....What a JOKE

I have never been able to take Urban the "Holy One" serious and this hammers that home.

Also ESPN GameDay should be embarrassed about how they talked about this. Desmond was the only one who said it is as simple as one drink, don't drive. The others talked about how he will get by this, he will stand up and say "I am sorry" and everyone will move on. I get we all make mistakes, but the level of he is just a kid and a good QB lets move on.

We all make mistakes - I am more upset at the "system" treating this different. Again - I guarantee if it wasn't their starting QB he wouldn't be playing for much longer.

Have no problem with the 1-game suspension. Seems fair enough if he's had no previous off-field issues.

My question is, would Gene Smith/OSU have been as lightning quick to announce the 1-game suspension if, say, Michigan State or Michigan was the next opponent?

You guys realize he didn't lose his scholarship right?

Lost his "summer aid" which just means if he takes summer classes he now has to pay for them. Oh and he has the opportunity to get it back

You might hit a bump and spill.

If this kind of discipline would have been handed out in the 1970s, I don't think Cal Stoll could have fielded a team for half the games.

i do believe the kid was under age and driving while under the influence

a 1 game suspension?

do you realize that a regular student could get his financial aid denied if they get into trouble with the law?

are we protecting an athlete? Drinking is one thing but getting behind the wheel is stupid and shows a lack of focus on the picture (his career/life)

The only criminal thing that affects federal aid is drug arrests. And since his athletic scholarship is solely paid for by Ohio St, I don't think he has to worry too much.

Stop it; if it didn't happen on campus the school and certainly us would never hear/care about it if it happened to a "regular" kid. And most certainly ESPN would not be talking about it. Financial aid denied? Sure, if they are incarcerated......no.....prison inmates are allowed to attend college (no they don't leave the prison...lol).

Admittedly I'm not on the football board as often as basketball so apologize if you have been posting regularity and stuff still, but nice to see you back. Always enjoyed your perspective on CFB issues.

JT Barrett's misdemeanor arrest is a serious violation. Any program of integrity would give an immediate minimum one game suspension, at the very minimum. Meyer has called Barrett "one of the very best leaders he's ever had". I have know doubt the Barrett is a good kid, but this really shows Urban Meyer's lack of standards and scheming nature. You assess him a minimal suspension, but hammer the kid personally by assessing a significant financial penalty. Meyer is the one who designated him as the best leader, yet he minimizes his own mistake of leader selection and mentoring by making sure he doesn't penalize himself by not having Barrett available for the stretch run. For some kids, this financial penalty would be devastating. But Meyer doesn't want to hurt himself, so he hits the kid where it hurts only him and not the team or the team's (Meyer's) success.
It's unethical in that it equates to a significant "fine" of an amateur athlete and it's scheming to serve punishment with minimal consequence to Meyer's coaching responsibilities.

Now Ohio State is saying its school drug and alcohol policy doesn't apply to a DUI breathalyzer test? Good Lord, Urban gonna Urban.

insanity

Can you imagine the firestorm happening here if this were to happen?

Again - the biggest joke of this isn't that they have a 1 game suspension or 2 weeks. I won't even debate if that is enough or too much. It is the sit, come back, win back the locker room, and if we are desperate and we play you and ride you to a National Title -- then 6 months later you have to pay for your own "Summer" school if you want to get ahead in academics to help us go for a 3rd National Title if they win this year. Or - when you "wink, wink" turn pro.

Meanwhile Urban gets a new contract and a raise far larger due to another National Title, that was won by a player who now gets to pay his own way if he wants his degree and help the team in the fall by taking summer classes.

Couldn't happen at a better time while he is out pimping his new book about what a holy man and leader he is. The FS1 Take is AWESOME and you would never see that on ESPN as they all fell over each other to defend Urban on Saturday.

We saw what happened -- See Jerry Kill's fury with the "old news" and more importantly "NO NEWS" Star Tribune Story -- this town runs with that, imagine if Mitch got picked up after winning the Jug (had that happened Saturday)

Thanks for the kind words; I read the forum every day, seldom do I post these days.

As predicted - Gophers played well enough to get an outstanding young man his job back.
As predicted - when Jones was terrible, Barrett would be back with no questions to lead them forward...just in time for Mich St and Michigan

Yeah, I think the team should show solidarity and threaten to not play the rest of the season until Governor Kasich resigns for not doing anything to stop the cop who pinched Barrett.
