It seems like several people suffer from Journalist envy on this board. I cant help but notice people constantly criticing Sid, Doogie and Myron. Either how bad of a story they wrote or how old they are or whatever. Its pretty pathetic. I think that most of you need to take a giant leap off of your high horse and either go get a job in the media or please STFU. ;)

I've just lived in better markets.

+1

The local sports media and wanna be's are underwhelming. Just live in a bigger or better market and you will see the light.

They won't change their habits, but at least they'll hear honest feedback from this forum.

Good point but it just seems like the people are sippin alot of hateraide in this forum.

You can start another 8 or 9 page thread on "Sit of Stand" if you'd find that more to your liking.

Why do you care?

Because it gets old seeing the constant criticism from a bunch of wish we were real journalists. Why do you care?

I've just lived in better markets.

The Twin Cities is one of the top 15 markets in the country. You have two major newspapers serving roughly a million people in the metro area. At one point, the Star was considered one of the best newspapers in the country. what market have you lived in that's so wonderful anyway?

I confess to making half my living as a writer (not sports) and am scared to death of the day when a critical public ignores my work. A thousand complaints are more welcome than disinterested silence. Given that, I'm thinking our local media types don't mind hearing what their readers and listeners think. Let 'er rip!

I'm not going to quit what I do to become a journalist. I'm competent. I expect that out of the people I work with, and it shouldn't be too much to expect something approaching competence from people in different fields. You could probably count the competent sports journalists in this town on two hands.

When was the Star Tribune ever rated as even a good paper? Maybe they had some poll or story telling eveyone how great they were, but never even in the top 15. Heck, they cann't even be compared to The Des Moines Register or Kansas City Star. When it comes to College athletics they are poor second to the Omaha World Herald.

If you want to throw around the best, you need to start in Chicago. The Tribune iniated the Big 10Round Up. With writers, former players the likes of Bill Jaus, Bill Gleason, Lester Munson and Rick Telander that case is closed. Those who write and have writen in the Twin Towns are wantabes. Name one who could have written for the Washington Post sports department. Who could have waltzed in an taken a job from Thomas Boswell, Sally Jenkins, Andrew Beyer, Michael Wilbon, John Feinstein, or Tony Kornheiser. Don't kid yourself they are what they are and they are in the Twin Towns because this is as far as their talent will take them.

They deserve the valid criticism offered here and on line on the star tribune site. This forum allows opposition, the Star Tribune not so much.

Since I have my journalism degree from the U of M, and currently work with (though not necessarily in) the media in my current market, I guess that makes me qualified to say with complete confidence that the Twin Cities sports media suck.

But really, no qualifications are needed to come to that conclusion. Just do some traveling and it becomes very obvious.

Sooo......

So it sounds like you're saying that the MN sports fan should expect a LOT less from their media than most on here expect from the coaching staff?

I'm one who elects not to criticize the media because that (as has been stated above by another poster) would essentially indicate that I even read much of it.

Bottom line:

> Pardon my ignorance but who is "Doogie"? I think that sums up the relevance

> Myron's not much more than an intellectual juvenile with pretty poor writing style and a pretty questionable agenda for the most part. I stopped reading long ago.

> People rip on Reusse and some of it is warranted but at least he's somewhat consistent, knows how to write, and his stuff doesn't sound like it was authored by a HS student.

> Sid's a homer, sure, and I can do without the "close personal friend" comments, and again, it's consistent and comes off as being written by an adult.

"Journalist envy" is one of the more ridiculous things I've ever heard. How do you envy somebody who does this for a living, can't write any better or more articulately than I can, and makes $60-$80K per year?

Houston, Kalamazoo (where I would get my news via Chicago), and New York.

I'd wager you wouldn't need that 2nd hand. Part of the problem is that just about every sportswriter in this town is whoring after a radio gig, since that's where the money is. And to do that you have to give up (at least part of) being a journalist to become an entertainer. KFAN is to journalism as WWF is to wrestling. Barriero had to quit writing for the Strib because the mgmt there wouldn't let him take endorsement money. Funny that for Sid that was more of a guideline than a rule.

BTW, anyone who's perusing this board expecting to find "journalism" is in the wrong place. Some days one could argue the same thing about the Strib's sports section. And I have lived in other media markets. The writers (and talking heads on KFAN) are a bunch of provincial rubes. Like Husker said, most of these hacks couldn't get a job doing copy in Chicago or NYC.

This post would be factually incorrect ... Ivan Carter, former PP writer, writes for the Wash. Post ... a former sports editor in town is now the head sports guy for the Wash. Post ... Selena Roberts spent time here, then went on the NY Times and eventually SI ... other talented Strib writers/columnists have had opportunities to go elsewhere over the years (NY, D.C., Chi., etc.), but because of different reasons, said NO.

As someone who has also worked in sports journalism (was a sports writer for seven years at a daily newspaper in Wisconsin), I guess I would be considered qualified to comment as well. What I will say is this: the Pioneer Press tends to be better, imo. The Strib on the other hand seems to sensationalize things as much as possible to gain more hits and attention (see the latest Royce White stuff over the past day to see what I mean).

This is also why people are so sour on the Strib. There is much less hand-wringing about the Pioneer Press and their coverage and with good reason. For the most part, I think they provide a more balanced approach than the Strib does.

To Doogie - I'm happy for Ivan Carter. I went to college with him and he was a guy that I worked with at the student newspaper at St. Olaf.
