per the Journal Star:

In the absence of the injured Wes Lunt, Illinois will play a pair of quarterbacks Saturday against Minnesota.

Coach Tim Beckman said Monday that the Gophers (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) can expect to see both senior Reilly O’Toole and sophomore Aaron Bailey, something he believes will make their preparations more difficult.

“I think that for them to prepare for two is always a little more challenging than to prepare for one,” he said.

How the Illini (3-4, 0-3 Big Ten) will make that work remains to be seen, offensive coordinator Bill Cubit said. And he doesn’t appear to be a big fan of the idea.

“I don’t know. I’ll be honest with you — I’ve never done it before,” Cubit said. “Both guys have pretty good qualities. We’ll figure it out.”

wouldn't using 4 QBs be even better? this is like razor blades, right?

So how would Cubit go about rotating them?

“I don’t know,” he said to open the interview. “I’ll be honest with you, I’ve never done it before, and they both got pretty good qualities. So we’ll figure it all out.”

That wasn’t the only time Cubit rested on, “I don’t know,” either. Right after his shrug, he was asked whether Beckman’s two-quarterback system was the best option.

“I don’t know. I’ll be honest with you, the playbook gets really expanded for one guy. How much can he handle?” Cubit said. “There’s a lot that’s involved with this. … It’s not as easy as everybody thinks it is.”

O’Toole saw considerable time in the past three games and appeared to be the answer. But Bailey added another dimension to this offense in his first time under center against Wisconsin, when he finished 2-of-5 with an interception -- but also carried the ball 12 times for 75 yards and a score.

This isn't a system the Illini are accustomed to. But Beckman thinks it's worth the risk. If it helps his team win, maybe Illinois' plan for success won't be so controversial.

"I mean, I really haven't done that since freshman year but, I mean, whatever helps the team," O'Toole added. "I think we're both capable quarterbacks."

This sounds like an incredible dumpster fire. If they're putting on a show for the media to throw off the Gophs, it's one of the best ones I've seen in a while.

How do you get the players to buy in when the O-Coordinator hasn't bought in? This will be interesting.

Cubit's quitting on Beckman, jump all over these guys and we might see another Cubit-Beckman blowup on the sidelines.

If they truly aren't going with the hot hand, and we can control the pace of the game with long drives they will have no chance at consistency on O.

Let's hope we don't turn it over early or something flukey happens, play this one like we did at Michigan and we're going to roll.

When you have two QBs, you have no QBs...

Frankly I want to be cocky for once. Usually I try to stay objective and reserved heading into games, and I will be happy with a one-point, quadruple overtime win, but I really really want to stomp these guys like I know we can given how our strengths play directly against their deficiencies.

They gave up 38 to Purdue, just like we did. They scored 12 fewer points than we did. They put up 28 points at Wisconsin last game. They have had a bye. This is their homecoming game. DON'T GET COCKY. Sid said Purdue wouldn't be a pushover. Who said they would be one????? This is NOT a gimme putt.

I don't think a message board poster acting cocky is going to have an effect on the play on the field.

1. They give up 271 yards per game on the ground to rank 122 out of 125 FBS teams, and give up an average of 5.26 yards per carry

2. Their passing outside of Lunt has not been good, with O'Toole and Bailey combining for a 40/76, 514 yard, 3 TD, 5 INT stat line. That's a 109.31 passing efficiency, which would be good for about 112th in the country if season to date.

3. The points against Wisconsin are not indicative of a great offense, given they scored on two short fields (31 and 42 yards) in the first half, and then proceeded to score twice more after the game was well out of reach at 38-14.

4. I'm not on the team so it doesn't really matter how cocky I am. I take on the risk of more disappointment in doing so but given I'm not playing my cockiness has nothing to do with the team's performance.

Pound the snot out of 'em, Jerry.

You just used a Sid quote. SMH.

Not just two Quarterbacks, but eight in the box on D - all game. They will totally sell out to the run.

I think both are high risk/low reward options.

It feels good to be really confident. I haven't felt that way since (ahem.....) a few of the Mason years.

This should be the kind of game where we can show them the diagram of which side of the center Cobb is going to run between the tackles on every play and then still get at least 4 yards/carry to keep the chains moving.
