per the Journal Sentinel:

Michigan’s ability to pressure quarterbacks has been thoroughly documented.

The Wolverines lead the Big Ten in sacks with 36 and although they recorded only two sacks in their victory over Wisconsin earlier this season, they harassed quarterback Alex Hornibrook for most of the game.

Minnesota’s defense hasn’t received as much notoriety, but the Gophers (8-5, 5-3 Big Ten), who face UW (9-2, 6-2) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium, are tied for No. 2 in the league in sacks with 33.

“I think they are playing really well up front,” UW coach Paul Chryst said Monday. “And they do enough with backers and schematically to challenge you.”

Go Gophers!!

We are (8-5, 5-3 Big Ten). More insight from Madison.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've gotten a lot more pressure than in the past but it hasn't been super consistent ... I think they're talking us up a bit to make a story.

Pretty much expected ( the Gophers record ) from a two bit newspaper in a two bit hamlet

Hmm...I've been told here that we don't pressure the QB.

You talking our's or the opponent's? Sorry had to do it...hope the Goph's O-line finds something extra Saturday.

Our OL is #1 in Big Ten for fewest sacks allowed (9). Take in Def/Off sack differential and we're at +24 and #1 in Big Ten.

Minnesota +24
Michigan +20
Nebraska +14
PSU +12
WI +7
tOSU +7
Illinois +6
Indiana +1
Iowa -3
NW -7
Purdue -7
Rutgers -10
Maryland -12
MSU -13

We've seen that the Gophers really get to step-up the pressure when they're playing with a lead. That's been good to watch.

That's a nice stat but it doesn't mean Mitch has not been under pressure...less than last year but he's also been a lot more mobile this year and been able to avoid sacks and make something out of nothing. No doubt the O-line has improved from last year, but it was pretty bad last year.

Bucky has a top 5 rush defense, so that's what I mean...hope the O-line finds a little extra Saturday.

We've gotten burned a few times but yeah I like the aggressiveness.

Pressure on a QB is almost never consistent. If you're second in the Big 10 in sacks, you are putting good pressure on your opponent. The other teams are doing things to stop you from getting sacks, so it won't ever be constant.

I mean more in the sense of consistent from game to game.

I was told here the OL sucked and that was the reason we had no passing game. whats going on here?

They're not throwing deep much. That helps keep the sack and hurry numbers down, but the protection has looked good to me. Better and better actually. Also seemed that the complaints have been more centered around run blocking than pass blocking anyway.

Just an opinion. You disgree?

It wasn't all that long ago that we had 10 or fewer sacks in an entire season.

Somebody look it up.

Seems to be right. Gophers got 13 sacks combined against Purdue and NW. They got 11 combined in the other 6 B1G games.

Purdue has no run game and we got a strong lead on NW so they had to throw the ball more than they would have liked. The teams we lost to had someone at QB who could run the ball when needed. That's my one hope for Saturday. Neither of there guys is a runner.

Honestly, they don't have much of a passing game either...marginally better than Gophs.

The increase in sacks has been nice to see and the pressure we were able to generate against Northwestern was really impressive. We are still getting very little out of the Defensive ends as a good percentage of the sacks have come from Richardson being a beast up the middle or from blitzing linebackers like Cashman and Celistin.

As long as the blitzing LB gets home more often then not it is a great way to get pressure, the risk is that if they pick it up you leave yourself exposed over the middle. Would be great if Richardson could get some help along the front four in order to allow the LB's to stay back and help defend the field but until we figure out a way to get more from those DEs the LB blitz is going to be a key way to get to the QB and we seem to have guys that are good at doing it.

Would need some sort of ratio of sacks to Quarterback drop backs to see if I'm a believer. If you hand the ball off to a running back 80% of the time it's hard to get sacked.

Gophs are 63% run 37% pass on the year.

That's an amazing stat!

Last week we had 7 sacks.

In 2010, we had 8 sacks.

WOW.
