per the Journal & Courier:

How Purdue football fares against programs such as Minnesota may define its success in 2016.

The Golden Gophers won only two Big Ten Conference games last season. One of them came while scoring 41 straight points in a rout of Purdue at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Minnesota advanced to a bowl game despite a 5-7 record, then beat Central Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl. Will those extra practices help the Gophers take a step forward?

Running hot

Minnesota sophomore Shanon Brooks had his coming out party against Purdue last season.

The honorable mention All-Big Ten choice is a big-play threat, breaking off runs of 75, 71, 40 and 38 yards while averaging 6 yards per carry. That 71-yard jaunt came during a career-best 176-yard performance at Ross-Ade Stadium last season.

Brooks recently broke his foot and is expected to miss three to five weeks, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The bad news for early Gophers opponents is he's not the only potential sophomore star in the Minnesota backfield. Rodney Smith rushed for 670 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Those two backs combined for 33 receptions and 291 yards.
