Fans are unimpressed by a lot of nonconference scheduling, most of which is about getting three wins and halfway to bowl eligibility before conference play even starts. But there is something to be said about getting the kinks out against Eastern Michigan instead of Michigan.
The Gophers barely got through their nonconference schedule last season but survived with three wins and more confidence than they had on Aug. 31 before they played a single Big Ten game.
It makes a difference.
