Joel:

Now that you have made your decision of a football coach in Jerry Kill (and we wish him all the best and look forward to winning many Big 10 titles) , Please focus your attention now on the basketball program. We need to direct our energy at extending Tubby Smiths Contract and outlining plans for a new practice facility. Both of these items should be your top priority right now.

One can only hope....he is focused on the Womens Rowing season right now, sorry.

Why does women's rowing, a very cheap title 9 compliant program, become the butt of all these jokes?? I've never understood that.

because apart from women's rowing team members and parents. no one at the university even knows it exists and couldn't care any less

Have you seen the amazing boathouse that was built for the women's rowing team? Clearly not. I bet it cost at least $400k, which does not qualify this as being a "very cheap" program as you call it.

Well, actually the facility cost over $4M, but that is for an infrastructure upgrade. The yearly expense is very cheap. Plus the program is a great fit for the U, 50+ women athletes to help offset title 9 requirements and our campus is on the banks of the river. Rowing helps our athletic department.
 

From a fan's perspective, Maturi appears to be an idiot. I'm sure it's not actually that bad, but his handling of these situations should be graded as an "F" from a PR perspective. Bring back McKinley Boston.

Lets get back to the original topic. Tubby needs to be taken care of in two ways and not tomorrow, not today, but YESTERDAY!

1) Lock him down with a lifetime contract
2) Build a practice facility now... the savings from hiring Kill as the football coach (versus a top target) will save about $1MM a year.. which is enough to service any debt on a nice facility and then some.

Stop fuc$king around Joel and get this done. The football search has taught me one thing... to value Tubby even more.. lets not f this up.

Actually, if you sit on top of the cliffs just south of the WA bridge and watch them row back and forth, it can be quite entertaining. Nothing like having a beer, enjoying a sunny day with a great view while watching other people exhaust themselves in a race without a finish line.

Good entertainment for me, for free :D although it's been a few years since I've been down there...

Not particularly, but going down the current road we're going can't be allowed to continue.
 

How about wrestling and volleyball? Has anybody heard of those? Does anybody care?

God bless Jerry Kill but football at Minnesota is not coming back in my lifetime and it's not Jerry Kill's fault and it's not Joel Maturi's fault. You can't turn back the clock 70 years.

So go to a wrestling match sometime. The same people hired J and Mike and supervise those sports. They're doing a bunch of stuff right.

I'm quite certain J. Robinson was here long before Joel Maturi. Not sure about the VB coach.
 

what is the deal with the new baseball renovations? Is that finalized or does Maturi need to work on that as well?

They got half the money needed from the Pohlads ($7 million?) but I think they still have to raise the other half. So it will likely be years. And I can only imagine the practice facility takes a backseat until the baseball money is raised, which means don't hold your breath, it's probably not going to happen.

Mike Hebert was hired by Chris Voelz before the merger of the men's and women's programs. Her very best hire.

This is far more likely to end up with Harris resigning but if it takes Maturi out too, I don't think many would shed a tear.
 

Reusse mentioned this Womens Golf Coach debacle by maturi on 1500ESPN Sports talk today. How can this guy screw up a womens Golf coach hire?/ We expect him to get a contract extension for Tubby and he can't get this right? Come on Joel...please do the State a huge favor and resign......
 

Volleyball hire.

Maturi has another big decision on his hands with the retirement of VB coach Mike Hebert. VB has been fantastic for years, has talent on the roster and even more on the way in plus a solid fan base. There is no excuse for not being able to make a solid hire.

Arizona State opened a new practice facility in 2009 at an estimated cost of $22 million. I was there last spring and it is unbelievable. Multiple courts, training rooms, and locker rooms for women's and men's basketball. Coaches offices overlooking the practice courts. Very nice, and certainly a recruiting tool.

I would guess that a facility of that type here would have a higher price tag, but using that as a model would be a good place to start.

women's golf team just had its best fall season in history
