Minnesota: KSTP-TV’s Joe Schmit is reporting that Parker search firm is digging around Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen and UCONN head coach Randy Edsall. Mullen makes around $1.2 million per year. Edsall makes around $1.35 million per year. FootballScoop has not confirmed anything linking Mullen or Edsall to Minnesota.

Go Gophers!!

Don't Know much about Mullen.

Not interested in Edsall. I'd rather have Sumlin any day over Edsall

Me too. I watched the Michigan - UConn game and was not impressed at all. Still, that was just one game and the only time I've ever seen UConn play.

What's the point of using this search firm if Joe Schmit knows their every move?

File under gathering info and doing what they are hired to do IMO.

Sounds like this Joe guy is into sensationalism.

I agree with this, while Joe's tweets are exciting and get everyone on here in a lather either positive or negative, I thought the purpose of the search firm was to be discreet?

Additionally I'd be much happier with leaked information if it was something exciting like, "search firm is digging around Nick Saban who wants to get back in to the Big 10 and take a paycut to rebuild a program that hasn't been relevant nationally in 50 years"

Whose to say he is actually getting it from the search firm in the first place?

The search firm is discreet, but don't you think they communicate with their No. 1 client, the client paying $90,000, pretty regularly?

Most definitely, just not sure where Joseph falls in that chain of command. I guess I feel more comfortable hearing the little birdies that speak with you Doogie, than Joe.

Joe's been on-air in town for close to 30-years... in other words, he knows a lot of people... he's even a member of Dunker's... he's my boss, so we obviously work very close together... we talk to different people, but I know his sources are very good.

ok that makes sense. It seems that my presence on this message board usually winds up with me having my foot in my mouth. thanks for at least not doing it too painfully.

Mullen makes me nervous. Have to question his character and commitment if he bailed on Mississippi State. The school gave him an opportunity to be a head coach and he bolts after 2 seasons? After a year where they lost a young man to cancer during the season?

This whole thread is a tempest in a teapot. All that is going on is the gathering of background information on possibile candidates. There is nothing to suggest any discusions are under way. Edsall has a decent resume and Mullen is a hot young coach, Parker wouldn't be doing their job, if they weren't getting background information on them. Until it gets to the interview stage it's just background chatter.

I don't dispute that your boss has good sources, but after the mess with how Brewster's firing was leaked, I would have hoped that Maturi would have clamped down on at the U anyone talking to the press.

If there is someone leaking confidential info, shame on them, and shame on Joel for not running a tight operation. But consider another scenario. I doubt anyone in the TC media has a source at Parker. There's always the possibility it's the candidates themselves (or their agents) leaking the news, for various reasons, but they would do that to some media bobo that they're tight with in CT or MS.

What if Maturi is purposely leaking some names, partially to gauge fan reaction, also to mollify fans. It may actually be though, that these guys have no interest in coaching here, or that we have no interest in them. Sort of like the Fulmer thang that went down earlier this week. Maybe you throw the media a bone or two, and it distracts them (and us on this board) while they go after their real target(s)? Brilliant strategy, unless there's presser in a couple of weeks where Marc Trestman gets introduced as the next coach.

It's possible... but so very much is your theory in your 2nd paragraph.

What happened to Randy Shannon?

This is my problem in using anonymous sources in sports reporting. Oftentimes, an agent is the one leaking "information," while other times it might be someone who is "leaking" an opinion. Unlike in news reporting, when the newspaper will identify why the source is being kept anonymous, in sports, reporters don't feel the need to do that.

This isn't an issue with Joe per se, but the industry as a whole. ESPN often goes with unnamed sources on stories that often flush out only as gossip. Joe could be right on with this report -- after all he is just saying that the search firm is researching these guys, not that they are hiring them -- but it could be someone else just throwing things against the wall to him.

Joe has been on air for 30 years in a variety of roles, so it's not unfathomable for him to have sources that are deep and plentiful, but it's also not unfathomable for him to understand that many times sources who want to remain anonymous want to do so because they either a-have an ax to grind or b-don't know what the hell they are talking about.

It gets to a point where you have someone like Shooter who "leaks" information that might as well -- and might -- come second and third hand from someone's barber.

Don't knock barbers. They often have the dirt. The company I work for has had barbers on campus for years. They often had the 411 on upcoming big announcements, as all the execs got their hair cut there.

BTW, Barbers would be a step up in journalism for Shooter. "Rummy on the next barstool" is his usual source.

The fact that Shooter still publishes in this town is a goddamn embarrassment.

Actually what's worse is that people pick up his trash and run with it.

Barbers and caddies always have the dirt, but they hear a lot of ridiculous gossip, too. Substitute "plumber" or "mailman" for barber and maybe my point is more clear.
