From the Howard Pulley site (posted yesterday):

"Hopkins senior guard-forward Joe Coleman will likely decide on a college choice by month’s end. He’s already visited the Gophers, with upcoming stops at Santa Clara and Iowa State...

Joe Coleman, the Hopkins basketball player who is the top prospect in the state, visited the Minnesota campus Friday with his mother. He is going to make trips to Santa Clara and Iowa State but there is a good chance he will follow his brother Dan Coleman to Minnesota. Dan is playing basketball in France."

We need to land Coleman. Getting him is as important as landing Royce/Rodney was. And hopefully he ends up having a much better impact on the program than White did.

Whether he does or he doesn't play here, he prolly will have a much better impact on the program. If not the program, at least on my serenity.

We simply can not afford to lose top in-state talent.

Clipped:

... Looking back to last season, Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith believes the team might have won five of the close games it lost if Trevor Mbakwe's 6-8, 240 pound body had been on the floor ...

I'm hearing that the Joe Coleman scheduled visit to Iowa State has been cancelled. Iowa St. just received a commit from a JUCO combo guard.

Hoiberg wants to win now

Royce - oh my
Jucos - risky
Academic fringe -Godfrey

I like Fred...hope he can hold it together until he can get a few seasons of 4 year recruits.

Fred has McKnight, Godfrey, Railey and Ejim as incoming freshman this year and has Cook and Odunsi coming in next year as freshman. He has plenty of four year recruits, what he did not have was returning players with experience so he took transfers and JUCO players to balance the classes instead of having 8 freshman in 2011.

Alright...I said I was out for awhile, but have to respond here.

Fred personally recruited the JUCO PG (kids profile says "combo" but he will be running the point exclusively this year in CC). That is how important the position is, and how much Fred believes he has found the missing link to what could be a special 2011-12 team. He is not taking anything for granted.

When he took over, there was an abundance of talented freshman coming in (Godfrey included) 2 Sr, 1 JR and 1 incoming JUCO transfer (D Phillips). If you look at only that, that's a pretty scary thing to consider in a conference like the Big 12 (or Big 10).

He's balancing the roster right now with new, serious and proven 2011 talent (assuming they stay...White, Allen and Babb). The only missing piece to that year's squad was an experienced PG, as we will be losing a 4 year starter at that position.

I mentioned in another thread, it's unfortunate to have to look past Coleman, because he is such a talent. That position just isn't an immediate need for Iowa State.
PG is (I think you guys can appreciate that) and waiting on a possible spring signee (*cough* Tharpe *cough*) is a slippery slope.

My guess is though, Joe (along with another PG) will be recruited by Coach Hoiberg right up until Joe says he is off the table, with attrition in major college basketball the way it is these days.

I am probably a bit biased (okay, absolutely), but I like the way he is building/posturing especially considering a very talented 2012 pool.

Signing off...now. Until Iowa State invades The Cities again, keep your ear to the grindstone (oh, and if I didn't mention it before, kick those Hoks in their little nads).

you really dont even need to mention the hawkeyes, that is how irrelevant they are in college bball.

Has Godfrey qualified for this year?

I hope this is true as it would be great news.

GophersNow: I'm hearing Hopkins star Joe Coleman could make his decision as soon as Thurs. He won't be going to Iowa St. It's down to Santa Clara & MN."

waiting on a possible spring signee (*cough* Tharpe *cough*) is a slippery slope.

If that's a slippery slope, what would you call giving Royce a scholly, having Chris Allen wait around for one whole year of eligibility, taking shots on academic risks like Godfrey. Seems like waiting for a spring signee might be the least of Fred's slippery slopes. (If any of those guys flunk out, quit, get in trouble and are kicked off, he's stuck in as tough a position as missing a spring signee would put him.)

Not sure if you are being serious or not as it has been reported here in two threads, but yes, he is eligible.

I was being serious, actually. I heard he had been admitted, but wasn't sure if he'd been cleared by the NCAA to play this year. And i was out of town all last week. thanks

Losing a player at positions of depth is different than waiting to sign a PG and having no luck when that is a lean position. Every player signed has various levels of risk involved. I'd say that besides White and Godfrey the risks are minimal or at least "average" for the players ISU has in the fold.

Waiting until spring to sign a PG would be scary as hell for ISU. From what I can tell, people on this board aren't excited about it either.

I would take it one step further and say that to my knowledge, Godfrey's issues with getting cleared were stemming from his moving from school to school not due to grades. The risk part of signing Godfrey was getting him in, I am not expecting him to flunk out once there, though I am not saying it is not possible or anything.

I am not sure what "risk" is involved in having Chris Allen around for a year because no one knows the real reason he was asked to leave MSU.

I understand the risk associated with White and I have gone on record as saying the I wish Fred had passed on him, but that was not my choice.

ISU cannot wait until spring for a point guard. We have to sign one. With that said, I think Fred pushed the panic button rather than waiting to see on Tharpe and Sledge. With that said, Fred knows better than I do as to whether he feels he can sign either, whether either is ready to play as a freshman or even if he can possibly sign Sledge in addition to McGee (ie if we would have another scholarship to use).

There are virtually always rationalizations that can be used for anything. All of these things, including having Chris Allen for one year, are "slippery slopes" because all of them have stings attached.

Izzo very rarely dismisses a player from a team. Especially a senior. I think it's probably fair to assume he isn't the greatest teammate in the world. Having him sitting around your program for two year to play one year isn't the best gamblie in the world to me. I'd take a chance on Royce given the upside and having at least 3 years to play before I'd venture the slippery slope that is Chris Allen.

Godfrey had more issues than just moving around. Not that I care, I'm happy he's there. I hope he does well. I like to see kids get qualified. But no other schools offered. I'm assuming they thought it was a bit of a slippery slope to take a chance on recruiting and tieing up a scholarship on him no matter why his transcripts were messed up. Hoiberg didn't. That's great.

But again, we can rationalize anything, including waiting for a top 100 pt. guard to sign in the spring. Hoiberg has a ton of slippery slopes (as do many other coaches). the reason to not wait on Tharpe is because of need....not because waiting until the spring is anymore of a slippery slope than Hoiberg is willing to take. He's already demonstrated that.

Fair enough. Would you say, without rationalizing your response, Fred had assembled some impressive talent at Iowa State for the 2011-12 basketball season, prior to the recent PG commit?

Question wasn't directed at me, but I have to say.. Iowa State could be a big story in college bball in 2011-12. They could wind up being _really_ good. Non-eligible-to-play team of the year for 2010-11.

After the last few years I'd take an ice covered slope and take my chances on falling.

Sure, if they are all still there and in good standing I think they have some good players. Babb is nice. I like Allen as a player. Royce is still very, very unproven. He's got to find some motivation if he's going to be good. But those are good building blocks. It'll be interesting to see how it works out. I have no idea how it will though. It's quite an experiment. I like Fred and hope it works out for him. I'd rather he be successful and McCaffery bomb at Iowa, that's for sure.

I agree with everything you said here. It would be a shame if (I understand the "if" here) all of these building blocks are still with Fred come 2011-12 only to not have a solid PG to distribute to them. Rationalized or not, this is the reason for the comment about waiting for the spring to hopefully have that player, especially when one, most likely twon of those three (Allen and White) will not be there the following season.

Fred is trying hard to catch lightning in a bottle with that squad, which hopefully helps build for the long term.
