Jamel Harbison can’t wait for practice to start again, on Aug. 1. The Gophers receiver who started last year’s season opener as a true freshman, only to tear his ACL in the first quarter, showed how far he has come during last Saturday’s spring game.

Harbison had five catches for 52 yards and a touchdown, leading the second-team offense. Not bad consider he's only eight months removed from major knee surgery.

“Jamel’s a dangerous receiver,” Leidner said. “You want to get the ball in his hands.”

The wide receiving corps is the biggest question for the offense. Derrick Engel had five catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in the spring game, but fellow starter Isaac Fruechte managed just one catch for five yards, and Devin Crawford-Tufts was out with a leg injury.

Those are the Gophers three projected starters for this fall, but Coach Jerry Kill makes no secret that the team is looking for more playmakers. Harbison and KJ Maye (two catches, 36 yards in the spring game) are both candidates, as are incoming recruits Drew Wolitarsky and Eric Carter.

Earlier in spring camp, Harbison said his speed was about 85 percent, coming back from the knee surgery.

On Saturday? “Ninety-five percent, just because the tempo was up a little more,” he said. “Felt good cutting on it and everything. So it’s not a problem right now.”

That’s good news for Minnesota's offense.

Note: Former Gophers TE John Rabe has been invited to Vikings rookie camp.

can anyone confirm he got a medical redshirt? I can't recall seeing that anywhere. Thanks!

Would love to know this as well. Hard to imagine he didn't after only playing a single quarter.

A healthy Harbison would be huge for the receiving corps because we are very thin in terms of talent at that spot, and it would help Nelson to have some reliable targets he can count on that can get open in Big Ten games.

You have time to request the Medical Waiver as long as they keep the medical records and transcripts and nobody gets rid of those.

He only took part in a handful of plays against UNLV before tearing his ACL. I don't think you have to worry about him getting a medical redshirt. It's a slam dunk.

Last I heard he wasn't participating with the team this semester. Assuming he takes care of business he'll be back for the fall, we'll have to re-evaluate him at that point.

At least he is still in school (I believe). Saw him walking around with a backpack on today.

Yeah he's still in school. Kill said he expects him to return to the team after he takes care of his business (my guess grades).

My son got me a number sixteen gold Harbison jersey at the spring game. I am hoping he has a great season and career as a Gopher, and I can hang onto the jersey until the time comes to return it to my son, and we will both have memories of it.

McDonald was standing on the Maroon sidelines during the spring game. I have a hard time believing that they have written him off.

You are right! This isn't rocket science stuff. I am always amazed how many times the question on McDonald's status comes up here and how many people say "He is gone.":banghead:

From what I have heard is that he is working out on his own with some of the assistant coaches on their own time to keep him up to speed so if he can come back for fall practice he will be able to jump back into things immediately.

He was working out with coaches. Business is not grades. He did quite well with that.

It's amazing to me how quickly Harbison has recovered from his knee surgery. Very impressive!

Yep, this is what I've heard too. It makes sense, if it were grade related, you would just say that he is on the team but on academic probation.

McDonald is very much in everyone's plans.
