per Souhan:

Smith is coaching the best team he's had at Minnesota, a team that he finds as likable to watch as it is to tutor. So after the Gophers beat South Dakota State, 88-64, he found himself musing cheerfully about Andre and Austin Hollins, two simpatico guards who might be changing the tenor of Smith's tenure.

"They both have a unique style of play,'' Smith said. "Austin is very lanky and very athletic, but Andre's pretty athletic also. We knew they were talented enough to play here, but I've been very pleased with the type of people they are, more than players.

"They're two of the best men I've ever had the good fortune to coach. That makes it a lot more fun, because you know those guys are going to do the right things in the class room and off the court. And they have a passion for the game. That makes it fun to coach them.''

Go Gophers!!

Since I bitch about Souhan on a near daily level, I'll give credit where credit is due. This is actually a nice change of pace to see. A column with a nice summation of where Tubby is this year, compliments paid to players, and dare I say it, a twinge of hope as an underlying tone?

Ok, who gave Jim the halcion?

+1. I rip on Souhan consistently as well and I couldn't believe what I read. Actually a decent article with FAIR analysis on the Gophers B-ball squad.

He would have been absolutely crazy to write a negative article about the basketball team at this point in the year. Thank you, Jim, for the good read.

souhan and patty ruesse will be first in line to stick the knife/pen in Tubbys back if/when things turn sour. Tubby has had a history of fast starts and sour finishes here . Overdue to get a Big Dance V.

That was my first thought when I read this, too. And if the Gophers do end up having a great/memorable season, Souhan will be first in line to take his free press credentials, free food, and free admission to Williams Arena, Assembly Hall, Breslin Center, NCAA Tournament sites, etc., and every other perk that goes with it.

Patrick actually is pretty high on the Gophers this year. He has them in the sweet sixteen. Admittedly, he also says anything less and Tubby should be fired.
