Jim Souhan column: Armelin is a fix, and a risk, at point

he is absolutely correct, Chip and Austin need to start, Rodney sits.

Iverson tried to muscle Sullinger, once smacking him with an elbow that sent Sullinger to the floor
From what I understood, this is incorrect.

Can someone please confirm whether I am an idiot or if Souhan is. Chip doesn't have a mohawk, Mav has the mohawk. So why is Souhan saying that Chip has a mohawk?

Why not?

Of the available options he is the only one who can break down a defense. OSU did not have anyone who could stay in front of him, and I think he has a pull-up game too. He just missed a dandy reverse and had one basket waived off because of charging call.

I really, really like Chip's upside and his attitude.

It's all about Chip, not Tubby. Chip has said in the past that it was "stressful" playing the point guard. HE has to feel comfortable. If he doesn't wanna play the point, no sense in Tubby trying to force him. I'm sure he'd accept doing it to help the team, but he has to find a way to feel comfortable within himself to do it. That being said, I think he can do it and would do an adequate job.

Gerald Fitch was PG size but didn't play that position until his Jr year at UK (when Cliff Hawkins was unavailable for a semester). He played very well and led UK to 32-4 season.

Playing Chip at PG is like playing Blake at PG. Both could do it but it is not optimal. Chip looks much more comfortable at 2G. I love the aggressiveness that Chip has in taking the ball to the basket. I don't see Chip as Tubby's point guard of the future.

I think Tubby more or less said yesterday in the post game that Chip was a defensive liability. Personally, I don't think that outweighs what he can bring offensively to the table.

Hollins got a shot, Chip is next.

I'm watching most all of our players be defensive liabilities from time to time. Other than the interior intimidation, this is a generally poor defensive club that has very difficult times getting stops when they need them. Chip shows energy on defense and he is fearless on the offensive end. On this club that should easily get you 25 minutes of court time.

My thoughts too. Dakich was doing some serious ripping on RSIII yesterday for completely taking plays off.

and he is fearless on the offensive end.

Is there any other player who can create his own shot or even considers taking the ball to the basket?

Chip. Chip. Chip. Chip.

There was a point in the second half...when Chip kind of took over the game...he even waived Hoff off when Hoff came for the ball...then Chip took his guy to the rack...missed the shot but got to the line.

I think we need to stop thinking of who is playing point gaurd and start to think about it as who ever has the ball is the point for this play...free Hoff up some and keep Hollins and Chip from feeling overly pressured.

Chip made some good decisions in transition yesterday by pulling the ball back out...which is an improvement from just a few games ago...

Regardless, we have to play guys that can and will score...

Has anyone else noticed one glaring problem with the idea of Chip at PG?....he cannot handle the ball. He is great attacking the rim, but has terrible handles and often gets a head of himself and loses the ball. I counted 3-4 times yesterday alone where he lost control of the ball while dribbling (a few in the open court too).

You kind of took the words out of my mouth. I hate to see giving guys starts because of a good showing, as in Hollins played well at Indiana so lets start him! No wait, Armelian played well against Ohio State so lets play him! No wait...

I do think that Chip showed that he can do things this offense is seriously missing. Someone who can drive, draw fouls, and *** finish ***. My God, he can actually finish and score.

On a side note - I would like to thank Pittsburgh for going for two yesterday. :)

He does have some dribbling issues at times, but he rarely loses the ball. He's athletic enough and quick enough to recover. For a guy who is aggressive he does not turn the ball over very much. Maybe you had him confused with Ahanmisi a few times since it appears that Armelin has co-opted Mavs hairdo in a blatant attempt to get into Tubby's good graces. :)

I think some people are confusing the ability to drive to the hoop, with the skill to handle the ball and bring it up versus pressure. You can still have HOff bring it up, chip run out and get the ball on the wing and start the offense from there.

I think if tubby went with the young guns they would grow.
I would play hoff, chip, hollins, with trevor and sampson. I don't think Tubby has the guts to not start Rodney though.

Tubby obviously understands that Williams has incredible upside. Unfortunately it's almost all upside and very little production. Yesterday it became obvious to me that Williams is simply petrified of making mistakes. When the game was out of hand and it was junk time - all of the sudden he is driving to the hoop on every possession. He can do it- he just doesn't. Somehow Tubby has not been able to communicate the right balance of making plays and yet securing the ball to this group. It seems we have a lot more guys trying not to fail than trying to succeed. Unfortunately this leads to just as many turnovers as you get with aggressive play.

Agreed completely here. Our guys are afraid to make mistakes, maybe once they get older they can get over that. If you make a mistake it's no big deal, the problem is if you don't learn how to correct that mistake is what drives coaches up the wall.

I don't know why Souhan needs to take that particular shot at the student section. Sorry they were doing what student sections do? Are they supposed to chant nice play Ohio State after the flop? The whole barn brought it. The team just didn't continue to be competitive. The only legit criticism of the crowd was people leaving early. That was not just the students. (I'm not a student by the way)

This!

Chip had one turnover according to box. He is obviously the best option, ideal or not.
