He's not terribly high on the Gophers for the season, ranking us last in the B1G and 7 spots behind Indiana: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/rankings/124/index1

Minnesota: 101

UNLV: 119
UNH: N/A
Western Michigan: 36
Syracuse: 95
Iowa: 40
Northwestern: 41
Wisconsin: 12
Purdue: 61
Michigan: 9
Illinois: 46
Nebraska: 20
Michigan St: 14

Go prove him wrong.

From the minimal digging that I did a few weeks ago on the NC opponents, it was pretty obvious to me that Western Michigan was the best of the 4. A QB expected to be drafted, plenty of returning starters, etc.

I'm glad it's the 3rd game of the season and not the first. Hopefully the Gophers will have a few bugs ironed out by then.

If he's that high on Western Michigan, he's high on something else as well.

I think they're the best team they'll play in the Non-Conference schedule. I think they are pretty good at throwing it around, but don't run the ball well, so that should help the Gophers.

Every time I read an article by Jerry Palm, it reminds me of my junior high school girlfriend. Her name was Rosie.

Agree with this. 36 is probably too high, but I think they'll definitely be the biggest non-conference test for the Gophers.

That does seem awfully low. Most people are ranking the Gophers around the low 70's. Western Michigan's going to be a challenge, but it seems here to be too highly rated. They do have a good QB, but they have a lot of new recievers, so it remains to be seen how their offense will click. I think Minnesota will finish better than he expects. Minnesota's final Sagarin ranking was #89, and the Gophers should be better than last year.

It just gives us the chance to exceed expectations.

Obviously, these sorts of things don't matter but 36 seems pretty high for Western Michigan. According to him, they should be significantly favored against the Gophers. I think it'll be a good game and they are our best NC opponent, he thinks they should run us out of the stadium.

Western Michigan #36 ...LOL ....this Palm guy is a tool.

Phil Steele had Western Michigan at 42 the last time I checked. Don't sleep on them, they're a decent squad. The thing I can't figure out is why anyone (including Palm) thinks that Illinois is going to be any good. They were absolutely putrid, losing their final six games before winning over a 6-7 UCLA team in some turd bowl. Oh, and they have a new coaching staff too. The Illini open up against Western Michigan on Sept. 1. I'm guessing Kill and company will be watching that game.

Remember last year, when we all had penciled in wins over NMSU and NDSU, and said that Miami (OH) would be the most difficult home game?

So according to these rankings we should be 2-0 and then lose the rest of our games? Unlikely to say the least.

Not really.

I don't recall a lot of people penciling in any wins, especially Gopher fans. I remember people predicting that Miami of Ohio was a much better team than New Mexico State and they were right. Iowa and Illinois are much better teams than New Mexico State as well, but things happen.

Besides the Western Michigan ranking being a bit out there I would submit that Michigan St. is probably the best team in the B1G this year. Michigan may not even be top 3.
