A few early notes from Kill:

- A WR busted a route on Leidner's interception last week
- Freshmen on defense "need to play". Have to get them ready for the big ten
- He reiterated again that Leidner will play. Jordan Lynch is the only other guy Kill has seen play with this injury. Mitch has talked to Jordan. Yesterday in practice you wouldn't know Mitch was injured according to Kill.

I'll continue to add anything else that is newsworthy below.

- Wolitarsky will play this week
- In regards to the passing game, Kill said the team needs to start transferring success in practice to the games
- TCU had multiple injuries to key players last year. Their record last year means nothing.

I just tuned in: he was talking about a 4-2-5 defense. What context was he talking about? I didn't hear it all.

I am pretty sure the box will be stacked against us.

anyone bring up Kill being in Petersens wedding? shootme

Jaymil, thank you for the heads up and the link to listen. On a side note: I enjoy your reading posts, You often provide interesting insight and information. Job well done.

I was happy to hear Wolitarsky will finally (really) play this week. I hope he picks up where he left off in the bowl game last year.

I was also fascinated to hear Kill was in Patterson's wedding.

At some point in time you have to start questioning the coaching. My two cents is that the reason they haven't transferred success in practice to the games is probably due to one of the following:

1. they haven't practiced this nearly enough. with the emphasis in running game we see, I'd say they aren't devoting nearly enough time to the passing game in practice;
2. they haven't practiced this intensely enough. they need to practice this under intense pressure until it becomes so precise that they can execute this in game conditions;
3. they are not practicing this against a strong enough defense and then in game conditions things break down due to pressure they're not accustomed to;
4. they are not calling the right pass plays against the right coverages during the game so players are too covered;
5. if good practice is not translating into good game performance, then perhaps the QB is just not a game day QB. the opposite may be true as well. Streveler, et al. may not practice as well as Leidner, but there's a chance one of them could perform better in games. Steveler in particular is very high energy, seems very cocky and from the little we saw he seemed very comfortable on the field during the game. My bet is he's better than Leidner when the poop hits the fan. Kill should've played all 4 of those guys in the first two games to get a sense of who the better player is when the lights go on. I don't care if we would've lost both games, the coaches need to evaluate all 4 of these kids under intense game conditions to see who can perform.

My sense tells me this is a coaching issue. I realize that by questioning Kill and staff I'm now labeled a traitor, a bad Gopher fan and a loser, but if I were Kills boss I would tell him that something looks broken in your passing attack and has looked that way the last two years. You better figure out a way to fix it or I'm going to question your tactics.

I will let others rip you apart for that's not my style, but I will say this...the first two games are not NFL pre-season. Every game counts so that is not the time to be "evaluating" your backups. Evaluation happens in camp and in recruiting. Have faith that everything will fall into place. ML7 did pretty well for us last year. Our guys are open, he just needs to calm down and get them the ball.

What I really want to know is...Did they dance together to the chicken dance and how good of a polka can Jerry do?

And which one was ahead in the conga line.

i realize that its not preseason, I honestly do. But if you want to go from 8-4 to someday being 10-2 or 11-1, you need to make some tough decisions, you need to be willing to have a year where you might go backwards in order to figure out how to go forward. I realize this isn't pro sports, but I don't love what I'm seeing. If you don't have 4, 5 or 6 guys on the field all making significant contributions most games, you will NEVER be great. All the best teams have that. The talent is there. Minnesota just doesn't use the talent properly on game day. Beating MTSU and EIU was nice, but doesn't mean much. We need to focus on how to become great even if that means taking a step or two backwards first.

Norwood should call Jerry into his office?

1. Guarantee they are working on the passing game in practice plenty.
2. You can't simulate game speed in practice, you are not going to hit the QB and you can't tackle all the time because you will wear down your players and get guys injured.
3. See number 2
4. There have been plenty of cases where the player was open the QB just didn't get them the ball. Not the coaches fault in that case.
5. Going to trust the coaches who see these guys in practice every day to know which one of them is best equipped to run the offense on game day as opposed to just tossing them out there on game day to see what happens.

I have been as critical as anyone of Kill and I still have my doubts but the points you are trying to make here just don't make sense. If you want to go after Kill and his staff on this issue the place you go after is the apparent inability to find the players that can execute the passing game the way we are going to need them to in order to help the team take the next step. The problem isn't a lack of work.

Wow. People still are questioning the coaching here?

I'll answer you're query, 1-5: game inexperience and chemistry.
Jones/Maxx/Leidner are second year players who have been together less than half a season. #1 WR Wolitarsky is too, AND has been hurt. Anyanwu got hurt, he was our top TE in the spring while Maxx was out. LT Lauer has been hurt, first year player RT Pirsig is onto his 3rd actual game. Maye was MIA for most of last year. Speed weapon slotWR/RB Edwards is on his 3rd game. Listing all of these actually makes the passing game issues make alot of sense, since most of our experience is in the interior OL, blocking TE's, and RB core.

Give it time to come together, patience is necessary to develop a program that hits on all cylinders. Until then we can run the ball and play D, that's enough to win alot of games, and THIS year might be good enough to win your 10 or 11.

I'll trust the coaching staff on this one that has been at it for a number of years and has a proven track record of success and gets to see these players everyday in practice.

last Spring I crowed about this til Killjoy was blue in the face.....now what is done is done and it's the 2014 season. forget about it and watch the team and buy some stuff (gear,tickets, beer)

I watched BTN Live yesterday and thought that they brought up a good point when discussing how Rutgers QB has developed under Ralph Friedgen. I believe it was Chuck Long saying that he works diligently with the QB after every play on mechanics and the passing game during practice. He thinks to many coaches try to coach to system rather than working on the fundamentals and mechanics. I thought of Kill's staff instantly. They seem to mold QB's to their system. We'll see how we do on Saturday.

Maxx and Leidner are roommates and have been here together for three years come January. Silly comment there. The rest of them have been working together for at least a year and a half so you're way off base on your thoughts and excuses. I think we have to have some questions about everything that is related to the passing game including coaching until it become a competent piece of our arsenal; which it has not been under Kill's watch. Not the end of the world, but let's not grasp for straws looking for excuses, either. No way in h*ll we win more games than last year without us having a credible passing attack.

Are you assuming that Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, tOSU, others are better than last year? MSU is not on our schedule.

Do you think Maxx and Leidner throw post routes to each other inside their house?

Do you think Mitch was getting all the first team reps 13 months ago?

Doesn't matter because most of them we can't beat without at minimum an efficient passing attack. They'll still be too strong for us to overpower at the point of attack with 8-9 in the box.

Your response is too dumb to respond to other than to say it's dumb. They've chucked thousands of balls to each other over the past three years. Our only hope is that Leidner maybe just needs a little more time to get used to playing under the bright lights, but even that seems like a stretch to me. Incremental improvement week to week in QB play is all we need it just hasn't shown up yet maybe it will Saturday.

Jaymil, thank you for the heads up and the link to listen. On a side note: I enjoy your reading posts, You often provide interesting insight and information. Job well done.

Thanks for the kind words 60's Guy, I appreciate it.

At some point in time you have to start questioning the coaching. My two cents...

You're not a traitor for making these comments, but most points are illogical. (1.) I'm surprised no one has made the point about practice time. They have a limited number of hours, per NCAA rules. Focusing the entire practice on passing to the demise of fine-tuning our strength - running - would be foolish. Kill and his staff have a proven successful track record.
(2.) Football is a long, physical grind. The staff is experienced enough to push the intensity level in practice without wearing the team out for Saturdays.
(3.) Are you suggesting we bring in "strong" teams to practice against? Or that our D is weak? Pretty funny.
(4.) We're all (correction, most people on this board) are arm chair QBs.
(5.) The only point that has any validity is that some guys are "gamers." College football history is filled with guys who are markedly different in games and practices. Some better, some worse. Laughable is rotating all the players in at any position, let alone QB. This isn't little league.

As for Kill's boss questioning tactics, this entire post must be sarcasm, intended to be funny. I chuckled.
