Jerry Kill to be announced as Minnesota’s next head coach

Sources have told NCAA Rumor Mill that Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi will hold a 2pm CT press conference on Monday to introduce Jerry Kill as the Golden Gophers’ new head football coach.

The 49-year old Kill has served as the head coach at Northern Illinois since 2008. He led the Huskies to the MAC Championship Game this season and a top-25 ranking. Kill has gone 23-16 in his three years in DeKalb, including an 18-6 mark in the MAC.

If this is true then the whole Facebook/Twitter thing - major fail!
 

Fire Maturi now. He should have been fired at the same time Brew was. Hire a new AD first and then have that AD hire his coach. Considering how early Brew was fired we would likely have a new coach and AD by now if the U had followed this path.
 


Im not believing it till the university confirms it.

is marquis tweeting because he is excited to play for this guy?? Really?? Guy makes Joel Maturi look like mr excitement.
 

Reusse said it best, this is kinda like when the U hired Dan Monson...that did not turn out so great.
 

Seriously... the program has many flaws

#1 - We can't even get a winning record
#2- We can't even make a lousy bowl
#3- We can't ever beat Wisconsin
#4- We have a hard time beating North Dakota
#5- We've even been beaten by South Dakota

Those are all problems with the team, and more specifically, the team as it existed under the most recent coach. The program, while it has some flaws, is still in better-than-average shape.
 

Goyya say I wasn't too excited about this name when I first heard it, but then I went to Wikipedia and read his bio. It really is pretty impressive. He's won everywhere he has been. Certainly not my 1st choice, or even 2nd or 3rd, but I will support him.
 




Mason ran a clean program but he didn't win.

Can you imagine him recruiting-Hi I'm jerry kill. Never coached higher than the mac. Never won the mac title. Signature win-beat the gophers during their 3-9 season.

Come on...give the guy a chance. I'll bet there are 100's of kids that weren't even thinking about Minnesota until this announcement.

....I was saving this for when Maturi actually got us a coach players wanted to play for.

Kill? Yeah, KILL the program. What a joke.

Sorry, running a clean ran, well coached team is not what keeps a coaches job. I'm not implying that I want a dirty program, but I do want a well coach team that is a contender. Kill will not make the team a contender...a name is what we needed to recruit...this guy isn't it.

Sorry, NCAA D-1 is not about teams that are well coached and clean...its about winning. If you want a "participation ribbon" play intramural's.

How about, "I'm Jerry Kill. I have never had a losing record at any school ever, I have been a coach for 17 years and had only 4 losing seasons. We have a brand new stadium, a great city, and a great school"
 

His team is currently ranked in the top 25, no?

I cannot see one big time recruit that will be excited to play for this guy.
 


Ferentz, Bielema, Tressel, and D'antonio aren't real exciting, and we all know they have bad teams, and no good players want to play for them. Also, they were ALL proven head coaches at HUGE schools in great conferences before they got where they are now. And to the ones who say they'd rather have brew, just remember how mr. excitement got dominated by mr. terrible hire earlier this year, with far more resources and recruiting tools. We can't be sure Kill would be great here, but we can't be sure on anyone we hire, even if they're "known." Don't go jump off a bridge or anything just because we hire this guy. (Although if you do, we won't miss you at the bank.)
 

The Northern Illinois message board is shedding no tears that kill is gone. They brought up the fact he can't beat teams with winning records. Nice hire, Joe.
