Extension plugged

Former Gophers coach Jerry Kill has monitored Minnesota’s progress in between his duties at Kansas State as associate athletics director and chief football administrator.

Claeys, who took over last year when Kill resigned, is finishing the first full year of a three-year, $4.5 million contract. The deal includes a relatively small buyout (currently about $500,000), but Kill believes Minnesota will extend the contract soon.

“There’s no question he deserves an extension,” Kill said in a telephone interview. “I don’t know why you wouldn’t extend a group of good people and coaches who’ve done things the right way, with integrity.”

Go Gophers!!

Hard to argue with the old ball coach. I for one want to see what this team looks like in 2018 when his firs recruiting class becomes upperclassmen.

coach kill is an ol' ball coach. its in his blood.

So did Joe call Kill and ask him if he thinks Tracy should get an extension? Not going to debate why he should or shouldn't as that is getting done in other threads but what did Joe think Kill would say? Of course Kill thinks his longtime DC and majority of his tightly knit staff should get an extension, he would have said the exact same thing the moment Claeys was hired and he would have said something similar even if the team was 3-8 as opposed to 8-3, he just would have phrased it different.

Seriously, he's a reporter, it's his job to make calls like this to Kill. We get it, you don't like Claeys.

It's a Twin Cities reporter's job to make phone calls to people currently employed by Kansas State?

In a vacuum no. I'm guessing you get the relevance here tho even if it doesn't support your opinion that an 8-3 coach who could tie for the division title this weekend isn't good enough for Minnesota.

Oh, gee, I thought Kill was TC's longtime boss and recently was the HC of Gophs football. My mistake.

As MNVCGUY said, what else is Kill going to say? Kill's thoughts have no bearing on if Claeys will be the coach moving forward.

Like it or not the local sports media will continue to get quotes from Jerry going forward. He was a very popular coach and had to retire at a young age.

Reporters in this town have made it clear they're going to seek out analysis from Kill on a regular basis. Your thoughts have no bearing on that now or moving forward.

They no doubt did the same when Brew was hired. Mase chose not to respond (mostly).

I have no problem with Claeys, I have my doubts on his ability to elevate the team above where guys like Kill and Mason have gotten the program but if Coyle wants to give him a chance to try I'm all for it. I just don't think he is as safe as some people on this board do based on the teams current record. I think the possibility still exists that even with an 8 win season Coyle may move on bringing in "his guy" if in fact he knows he can get that person to come here.

I get it, this is a lazy midweek piece, guess I just don't see the point of asking Kill a question that we could all answer for him. If you are going to go to Kill, get a quote about the rivalry or the seniors he recruited. Asking him if he thinks Claeys should get an extension is just lazy because of course he is going to say yes and like I said he would say yes no matter what the current state of the program was.

Maybe the reporter could ask Jerry how many trophy games Claeys has won in his tenor??

Technically they could ask Mase about Claeys too. I have no problem with them talking to Kill, but you know what Kill's answer is going to be before even asking this question.

Well let's see. He could have said...

"Tracy should have gotten a longer contract from the outset."
"I really thought the Gophers would be better this year."
"The AD should be able to wait for the end of the season before making a decision."
"Tracy is a great guy, and I wish him the best."
"Things aren't the same between Tracy and me since he fired Matt Limegrover."

As a former writer, I can confirm tell you with some confidence that the reason you ask people for comments is because you need something to write about, and you never know what they'll say.

Coach Claeys please make it impossible for them not to extend you ...

I personally think Claeys deserves it, however with Coyle at the helm I don't think he'll get it unless he wins at least one out of the last two games this year.

Coyle loses all credibility if he fires Claeys after the bowl game, so its outcome should have no bearing. The decision, whatever it is, has to be made no later than this Sunday.

Yep...and they ask and quote Mas fairly regularly to this day. Flip, Dutcher, Wooger, Brooks, etc, have all been sought out and quoted over the years. It's standard.
