DL65 will give the full report, but just listened to Kill with Sid. He started by saying the Special Teams did a good job but that the Defense gave away big plays, something that can't happened. He followed that by criticism of the Offense. "It always easier to be critical when you win."

Oddly enough it felt good hearing Jerry talk about the problems while it was irritating reading all the bitchin around here.

Kill sounded a little down, though maybe that was more about following the massive praise that Sid gave him as the "Greatest Coach in the Country" followed by a pitch to buy "Season Tickets before they're all gone". Even for Sid that was WAY over the top, but something else might have been at play here.

Sid rips him on the Sunday Night Show, but overly praises him on the Morning Show. Some people here were surprised to read that the Athletic Department has people that read Gopherhole. Wonder if Sid would be surprised to hear that Jerry has people who watch on Sunday night?

If I was a coach I would not be happy with what I saw on Thursday night. I would be thrilled with the W and some of the big plays but I would be frustrated by the fact that we were not able to dominate a far weaker team and let them stay in it through the first half. I didn't hear Kill's interview but if that is the tact he is taking with the team I am thrilled to hear that because they shouldn't be satisfied with the performance in game one.

You can be happy about the victory but not satisfied with the way the team played. People in here seem to forget that.

WTF, doesn't he know they won by 28? The team scored 51 points, obviously they played an amazing game.

It should be noted that Kill also said that he thought UNLV was much better than people were giving them credit for. After reading about and watching games this weekend Jerry has a good point.

He needs to realize that a win is a win is a win, and it really doesn't matter who they played or how they coached and executed. Lay off, Jerry. Right, Gopherhole?

Their style of offense helps close talent gaps.

Yep, the dude is clearly just a troll. I don't know why he can't just be happy with a win.

There is a difference between not being satisfied with the way the team played and having a foaming at the mouth meltdown. People in here seem to forget that.

Will be interesting to see how UNLV does in the weeks ahead. My gut tells me they are headed for another 2-3 win season and a new head coach but too early to really tell for sure.

Your gut should take another look at their schedule. :)

I'd much rather have the fans pissed off at a lackluster outing than not care at all.

"Lackluster" might be a little to pejorative considering how they looked in that 2nd Half. One of the Gopher players who was just interviewed when asked about the game said "We were happy, but not satisfied."

We won't know a lot about this Gopher team until they play San Jose St. They shut out Sacramento State yesterday. So I'm not going to get to high or low until the results of that game. As far as Kill being negative, probably the result of viewing the game film.

True, but there also is a difference between Thursday night bad taste in your mouth posting and a 4 day later composed radio show. Could be JK was just as upset with the things that went wrong as others were.

I think life is part bluster, part truth, part insanity. Right now, I am remembering how Nelson ran for the long TD where he had blockers all the way down the field. Every player had his man locked up and defeated. That is a play that often breaks down. It was excellent because it has been rehearsed to perfection. this team is ready for greater things. Yes, the coach can get a little bent out of shape now about other areas to address, as he should. Otherwise the bluster and the insanity take over the mind and all the good from practice gets lost on the field and it starts to break down.

It is very possible that we will see other great plays like this in other games. It takes discipline, practice and a good deal of mental visualization. Yes, mental visualization. These kids have to see themselves succeed. The game video will show many great plays and plays they need to see how they can fix the problems.

The great thing about following the team, is that many of the kids that succeeded Thursday night spent a lot of time watching and visualizing success this past summer in the training facility. It was obvious that they all worked very hard over the course of the year in the weight room and going over game footage.

It always easier and more effective to coach and criticize the team after a win. While the team won, they did give up a 4th down 40 yard TD. And also the 40 yard draw which saw Correnet go un touched right up the gut. Both need to be corrected. The running game starts with toughness up front. We are bigger and stronger, but are we tougher, nastier, able make the line of scrimmage 3 yards down the field? Can we get blockers to the second level? Can the offensive tackles cut off the inside charge?

And can Nelson hit a deep pass off play action in the pocket? It takes precision in ball the ball fake, the pivot to hide the ball, and when he pivots again setting his feet he has to throw on time. And that points to the receiver, he has to have separation off a out and up or out and post. The play action pass is intended to strike at 30 to 40 yards down field.
This team would like to take 3 to 5 deep shots a game. The ideal pass is long and arching with the receiver able to run under it. There is plenty to work on, and the players realize they need to get better. And if they don't, that's why Coach Kill is a little irritated.

Couldn't agree more. Kill is showing he is on top of it. The team having a little faith in Kill will follow his lead. No doubt.

Why on earth would Kill be irritated after a big victory?

Could it be because the team that took the field on Thursday won't win a game in the B10 without huge improvements?

It's early. Let's get better next week.

I get the criticism. I think we all agree that the offense is going to have to improve in order to take the next step. However, people need to realize that the team looked far better in the second half than the first. This was not only the Gophers. There were plenty of teams that came out slow in the first, had head scratching halftime scores, and ended up winning convincingly. First game jitters and a few mistakes you get out of your system early on in the season.

How many coaches do you know that ever say they are satisfied with how their team played? With the exception of bowl game victories, it is usually doom and gloom and Kill is no exception. Get use to it now that the season has started.

Go Gophers!

Go Gophers!

Very true. It is rare to hear a coach that is 100 percent satisfied. I like that Kill can recognize the good and the bad and not sugar coat everything.

I think a lot of people choose to forget that this was a 6-7 football team last year which took TT to the wire in what was practically a home game for them, and probably should have won if not for the late game breakdown. I think that most all of us can agree that this should be an improved team as well. Oh......and let's not forget that this same Gophers team took UNLV to 3OT and barely edged them in a game where the offense was able to muster a lousy 13 points in regulation.

I was not happy with how the Gophers played Thursday. It was ugly and the offense struggled to make plays. That being said they won big and made plays to pull away. Jerry Kill shouldn't be happy and like all other coaches you need to keep pushing to get better. Gophers need to get better and they have two more games to figure things out before they play San Jose State.

Fans complain about inconsistent play, Coaches use inconsistent play as teaching moments. Rookie perception versus Professional perception. Coach Kill has NOT said anything publicly that he hasn't previously said to the team.

It's time. This is JKs team now and he has done a great job of getting his guys to pick themselves up off the floor. Now that they are starting to believe, he's right to expect excellence and to have his players expect it of themselves. His approach to motivation is rightfully changing as circumstances improve. I'm quite sure he is as positive as can be about the good things that happened. But at this point if he stays cheerleading through the bad things the players will see that and start taking him for a joke. Think 'ol Jeez-o Beez-o Waker

The way I see it, things could not have gone better. Decisive victory points-wise, but plenty of "coaching opportunities" for this week. You can bet we won't be looking past NMSU.

Sincerely, Homer

Good post.

My concern isn't that there was an effort or mental issue. I can sometimes be critical of Kill, especially regarding some of his more questionable calls and the team's lack of mental focus. There was none of that Thursday, as the team was almost without penalty and the playcalling was solid.

My concern is that talent-wise, we didn't look that much better than UNLV. We didn't dominate the trenches like a Big Ten team should, we couldn't separate from their corners, and Nelson looked terribly inaccurate and indecisive with limited arm strength. I'm not sure what level of coaching is going to fix some of our personnel issues.
