Jeff Goodman: These guys' jobs could be in jeopardy

I Doubt Cronin (UC) Has To Worry Much

UC crashed and burned its program in 2005. He had to rebuild (in BIG EAST) from scratch in 2006.

Bearcats have improved their W total each year under him - 11, 13, 16, and 19. Every player but 1 has graduated in those 4 seasons. His recruiting has been very good.

He has 4 years left on his UC contract. He'll be there a while yet.

What about the Michigan coach? I know they made the NCAA tourney one year under him, but I would think expectations are huge at that school.

Those were my first thoughts as well. I don't follow Mich that closely but Beiliein doesn't have a senior on the roster this year. I hope he gets a chance to coach these underclassmen and Juniors next year.

What about Carmody at Northwestern how long do you get to be at a job before you need to make an NCAA tournament.

Carmody is secure - he led NU to the most wins in school history in a season last year.

Ed DeChellis is the one Big Ten coach that has even more to worry about than Beilein. But I agree that Beilein has done a poor job. You gotta have Big Ten athletes to win in the Big Ten - I'm surprised Beilein didn't understand that.

Ed and Bill...

I have said this before and I will say it again.. I can't understand why a major university like Penn State would put up with Ed DeChellis as long as they have.
I like Ed Dechellis as a person. He is a genuinely good fellow but his record at Penn State is way too Northwestern like.

And that brings up another point...

Why is Northwestern always given a pass on being a lousy basketball school? They win at football and they need 95 guys. Why can't Carmody get 7 good players (like Stanford does) every once in a while? He usually gets 1 or 2 top Big Ten players and the rest are just low level role players. I can see that happening at Northwestern but not year after year after year...

For a single Big Ten School to never ever have made the NCAA is ridiculous.

At least Northwestern and Penn State will have some competition for finishing 12th next year when Nebraska joins the league.

I think Ed DeChellis is going to be out at PSU by this time next season. I don't think they are a serious NCAA tourney bid contender this year, they have the toughest schedule in the Big Ten (look who they don't play twice - two expected bottom half teams in IU and Iowa), and another lackluster season ought to seal his fate. I am rooting for Bruce Pearl to get ousted at Tennessee and wind up at Penn State - it would be interesting, especially for the PSU-Illinois series.
