What happened to Jason Dickson? At 6' 6" 320 lbs, he could have been an extra big body to anchor a tackle position. He played against Rutgers and Maryland, but it appears he was used sparingly.

Is he not that good, or is it something else.

I've been asking this all year. Something must be off if he is not good enough to come in due an injury to Dan and then shuffle the line somehow. Unless he did and I drunkenly missed it. Hope the best for him moving forward. I doubt it's a redshirt thing. That goes out the window in that situation.
 

I’m with you guys. He redshirted last year, and this year he’s only appeared against Maryland and Rutgers. He was relatively raw coming out of Juco (only played basketball in HS), but that’s no excuse at this point. A little concerning if he’s not even getting relief reps.

This one is a head-scratcher.

I'd not heard that he didn't play football in high school.
 

By all accounts he is the #7 O-lineman. We just haven't needed to go 7 deep this year as we haven't had more than one starter out at a time. Doesn't mean he is a bust or anything.
 


At some point, you have to give guys a shot. From all accounts, the Gophers were planning to use the 6-man OL front against WI, but they backed off when Faalele got hurt.

Look, maybe Dickson stinks. But why not at least try? If the Gophers only have 6 OL on the entire roster they are comfortable putting in a game, that says something about the recruiting and development on the OL. You would think they should have someone on the roster who can go in for a few plays without embarrassing themselves.
 

At some point in time, even an immovable statue has a role to play at getting in the way.
 

It takes time to develop an O-lineman. Sconnie will has 3 draft picks on their line...we won't compete consistently until we have that kind of talent on our O-line. Next year we will be better as we bring everyone back and hopefully we will start to reload instead of rebuild after that....

Much easier said on a forum than done. OL and DL takes the longest to turn-over and develop. We have benefited quickly by being able to plug in Daniel Faalele as a freshman, but that’s rare. I’ve seen it on other threads as well, “why aren’t we getting more OL?” Again easier said than done. I’m sure they have tried recruiting high-end OL and missed... as we know some of the local names.

As well, we are not losing any of the top six to graduation so we should be better next year (and deeper and more developed). Brian Callahan has done well with this group and I trust that will continue.

I have to believe that even our #7 OL is better at blocking (both pass and run) than our best TE.

It's pretty clear at this point that KC won't budge from using the TE as nothing more than a 6th blocker.

So I'm with you. When Dunlap was out for Iowa, and when Faalele went out against Wisc, they refused to put any other backup OL in the game for the 6th OL. Now obviously, they didn't have any of those guys practice the position. So you're not just going to throw a guy in there with no practice. That is practically, what happened, I would guess. But then that just makes me question: why didn't you practice it? It's not like you throw the ball to TEs. Don't know at what point Dunlap couldn't go for Iowa. Maybe it was late in the week.
 

Fleck has said time and time again that they trust 6 guys on the OL. That scares me a bit. Hope we get better recruiting and development going forward. All are back next year.
 

With the top six all back next year, will be interesting to see what happens with some of the guys from the 2018 and 2017 classes.

Sassack is a 3* guy from the 2017 class who is still shown on the roster. Blaise is obviously a starter and JMS cracked the starting lineup this year.

In 2018 class, obviously Dunlap and Faalele are starters, and the eponymous Dickson is a 3*, but there were additionally four(!) more 3* recruits in that class on the OL: York and Norton have already transferred out I believe, and Beier and Boe have yet to get significant playing reps.

And in 2019 we had JJ Geudet, who apparently was getting serious consideration in spring, but coaches wanted to redshirt him this season. Logan Richter is also shown as an OL commit, but is on the roster now as a DL.

EDIT: also forgot Nate Umlor was switched to OL this season.
EDIT2: saw in another thread that Ben Davis walked with the seniors

It worries me when I see them just plain get beat / wiff on some plays. LIke maybe they'll clean that up, if so great, I'm no OL expert... but it worries me.

Richter is a DL and saw action there. Geudet is the 7th guy next year IMO and will hopefully provide the depth to push guys to play better.
 

Just saw on another thread someone mentioned that Ben Davis walked with the seniors, so he will not be back.

Well here is a couple schollies to help us beef up the remaining 2020 class I suppose
 

We don't really have any reason to believe anything strange was going on. It sounds like he just wasn't better than the 6/7 guys ahead of him. It's never fun to miss on recruits, maybe we missed on him or maybe he is a late bloomer.
 

I’d say it seems more likely we were sending a message. We think 6 guys can play. Don’t like it? Transfer. (We need 10 scholarships to open up to recruit 25 guys every year.)
Makes no other sense you don’t have a backup prepared to play. Guys improve leaps and bounds with the taste of game action to motivate them. It’s hard to stay motivated knowing the coach doesn’t believe you can play.

Honestly, what makes you think he can play?
 

Isn't this a normal part of attrition? Players may not wait until their Senior year to play, or they can't crack the starting lineup. Others want to be here, and being a bench player is perfectly okay with them.
 

So how few lineman do we have now? We only have two coming in. Worried about depth and lack of them now.

Assuming no more transfers...with the current commits, looks like 12 scholarship OL (Cooper did the maroon shirt or whatever and I think Cody Smith Ruschmeyer are walkons)

Assuming we hit the OL hard next cycle. Would still love one more this cycle
