With Boston College firing their head coach, I think it would make sense to go after Cottrell (Eden Prairie). I'm not sure why he was never offered in the first place, but given our needs at middle linebacker, and Cotrell's considerable talents, I think it would make a lot of sense to make a strong push in the last two months. Cottrell has already made his official visit to BC, which means that it would be difficult for the new coaching staff to make much of a connection in short time.

Anyway, just a thought. We need linebackers.

Indeed we do. I don't know that much about football, but it appears in Claeys' defense, linebackers absolutely have to clean up because the D-line is more about "forcing" the offense instead of making tackles. Our guys didn't seem to be able to do that consistently this season.

Cottrell seems like he would be a natual fit (local kid, position of need), but for whatever reason it seems that we don't have any interest.

I've been really surprised during the entire recruiting process with Cottrell because we haven't given him an offer. I thought we would have offered him right around the same time we offered Rucker and Brookins. I came to the conclusion that he was just not interested in the U (maybe made it clear he wants to "go away" for school). Hopefully that changes things and we can get this guy to stay at the U.

The only other conclusion that I could make is that Cottrell projects to be more of a DE (already 6'4" 220ish) and we didn't think he was that speed DE that we like. I think he plays MLB in college and I think he'll be a pretty darn good one.

I haven't heard any recruiting buzz for linebackers other than Rayfield Dixon.

Yeah they've been scouting the JUCO scene pretty hard. Also, there are two linebackers visiting this weekend. I think we'll need at least one more linebacker (two if Beal is done)

I think we need more size in the middle, however. Maybe Claeys simply disagrees as the emphasis is clearly on speed over size at every position.

Saw a tweet from Charley Walters.

@Charley_Walters
Gophers football scouting some Kansas junior college linebackers.

The de-commitment of Drew Davis at the end of last year hurt. He seemed to be the guy we were targeting as the long-term solution at MLB. Since he switched over to NC St just before signing day, it didn't give us a chance to get a different MLB in last year's class and is now part of the reason we have to explore the JC ranks.

I am by no means any expert of EP football. I am basing my opinion off of one game vs. Lakeville North. He seems like a very good high school linebacker but appeared to be somewhat slow footed.

I am an EP guy and have had the pleasure of watching this kid, almost every game the last two years. He is an awesome kid and a great football player. Would love to have him as a Gopher but also excited to follow him where ever he goes. Not sure about foot speed, never seemed to be an issue, especially when you can sniff out the ball and hit like a truck.

All that said, I would be suprised if he didn't end up at BC unless something weird happened with new BC coach. That said, it doesn't hurt to ask....

Is Cotrell fast? Claeys seems to prefer speed over size/strength.

Speak of the devil:

Eden Prairie (Minn.) outside linebacker Jack Cottrell did not like to see it happen, but he believes it was a move Boston College had to make.

The three-star prospect and Boston College commit heard the news that Frank Spaziani was let go as the Eagles’ coach Sunday.

“I think it’s a tough thing to have happen but it was necessary after the past two seasons,” he said.

Cottrell’s commitment to Boston College is still solid, but he said if another team offers he could look around. Iowa State could be close to offering.

“I’m still firm,” he said, “but Iowa State would be my next choice.”

Cottrell said in-state Minnesota could also offer.

Translation: I'm committed until something else comes along, just like every recruit

You can't really blame him though, who knows if he would even fit into the new BC coaches system.

At least he is not drinking the kook-aid. Interesting he was committed to a coach that was on such thin ice and seemed indifferent to him being fired.

Well BC is his only listed offer other than North Dakota.

That's in part because he committed really early, however.
