...and nothing that happened yesterday hasn't happened before.
For most Gopher fans, yesterday's result caused a lot of things, ranging from
anger, nausea, finger-pointing, dysentery, maniacal rants, etc. One can understand that
when one cares so much about the team. I guarantee you that the players and coaches
are completely mortified.
More often than not teams spring back from events like this. One only needs to look
at Kansas' win over GaTech one week after losing to NDSU. VaTech lost to James
Madison, and the list goes on and on and on.
During the course of a season, an FCS team would get ground down in an FBS schedule
because of schollie limits and depth. However, for just one game, it usually comes down
to their starting 22 vs your starting 22, and the differences between an FCS team and an FBS
team are not so great. Plus, the Gophers appeared to really be flat and on an emotional
letdown after their highly-charged (and good) win over MTSU, while USD played the
game like it was their Super Bowl. Any remaining differences can be swept away in
that instance. Its anybody's game.
I always liked playing the Dakotas, but I would hope that the Gophers would be
more "into it" than they have been. That IS on the coaches, but it is college
football, 18-22 year olds. Wild mood swings happen.
USC comes a calling on Saturday, and after watching this great sport for 40 years,
I have seen teams bounce back and upset favored opponents in exactly this type
of situation more times than I can count. USC looks above-average. That's about it.
If I were a guessing man, I would guess that they just might come in here flat next
week.
What would happen if the Gophers were to win? It would NOT be the biggest upset in
CFB history. Much bigger ones have happened.
However, Brew will have to do his very best coaching this week. I say let's see what
they can do. Let's challenge him with this. Back in '86, Gutey lost to Pacific at home and then
got beat at OU 63-0, but he rallied a team most thought was dead to a 5-3 Big 10 record
and the Liberty Bowl.
We lost to USD, and most people think this team is dead. They had one horrible, awful game.
Nine years earlier, many more people had one, horrible, awful day. Let's keep this
in perspective.
Congrats to USD on what will go down as a great win for their program. They deserved to win
because of how they played. Maybe USC will be saying the same thing to us after this
Saturday.
Let's hope for the best and see what happens. You're Gopher fans, after all. You should
know how to do this.
We finally have the right offensive system for our climate and local talent base. I would
hate to see that scrubbed because of one bad day. The execution was awful on defense,
but let's see what happens this week. Let's just see. College football really is week-to-week,
especially in the early part of the season.
