...and nothing that happened yesterday hasn't happened before.

For most Gopher fans, yesterday's result caused a lot of things, ranging from
anger, nausea, finger-pointing, dysentery, maniacal rants, etc. One can understand that
when one cares so much about the team. I guarantee you that the players and coaches
are completely mortified.

More often than not teams spring back from events like this. One only needs to look
at Kansas' win over GaTech one week after losing to NDSU. VaTech lost to James
Madison, and the list goes on and on and on.

During the course of a season, an FCS team would get ground down in an FBS schedule
because of schollie limits and depth. However, for just one game, it usually comes down
to their starting 22 vs your starting 22, and the differences between an FCS team and an FBS
team are not so great. Plus, the Gophers appeared to really be flat and on an emotional
letdown after their highly-charged (and good) win over MTSU, while USD played the
game like it was their Super Bowl. Any remaining differences can be swept away in
that instance. Its anybody's game.

I always liked playing the Dakotas, but I would hope that the Gophers would be
more "into it" than they have been. That IS on the coaches, but it is college
football, 18-22 year olds. Wild mood swings happen.

USC comes a calling on Saturday, and after watching this great sport for 40 years,
I have seen teams bounce back and upset favored opponents in exactly this type
of situation more times than I can count. USC looks above-average. That's about it.
If I were a guessing man, I would guess that they just might come in here flat next
week.

What would happen if the Gophers were to win? It would NOT be the biggest upset in
CFB history. Much bigger ones have happened.

However, Brew will have to do his very best coaching this week. I say let's see what
they can do. Let's challenge him with this. Back in '86, Gutey lost to Pacific at home and then
got beat at OU 63-0, but he rallied a team most thought was dead to a 5-3 Big 10 record
and the Liberty Bowl.

We lost to USD, and most people think this team is dead. They had one horrible, awful game.
Nine years earlier, many more people had one, horrible, awful day. Let's keep this
in perspective.

Congrats to USD on what will go down as a great win for their program. They deserved to win
because of how they played. Maybe USC will be saying the same thing to us after this
Saturday.

Let's hope for the best and see what happens. You're Gopher fans, after all. You should
know how to do this.

We finally have the right offensive system for our climate and local talent base. I would
hate to see that scrubbed because of one bad day. The execution was awful on defense,
but let's see what happens this week. Let's just see. College football really is week-to-week,
especially in the early part of the season.:)

Metrolax... you are far too rational for an internet board. Shut up.

I don't think anyone is comparing this to 9/11, people are just calling for the head coach to be fired.

What happened yesterday was unacceptable (and i've been a Brewster supporter). USD is a way less developed program than NDSU or James Madison. This game didn't happen in our coach's 1st season (like the NDSU wins over us and Kansas) and they didn't happen against a coach with some built in credibility (Beamer). If USD was to play NDSU they'd probably be 10-15 point dogs, and they came into TCF and embarrased our defense. That's completely unacceptable for a coach who hasn't proven anything and is in his 4th season.

Again, it wasn't even the most important thing to happen in my life yesterday, I am not overblowing this as some sort of national tragedy. But in the terms of gopher football and especially the Brewster era, it was catastrophic. IMO, it's done.

Great post but there has been no evidence in year 4 of this regime that this coach has the ability to do his best coaching job this week.

However the coach could surprise.

Fantastic post, metrolax. Brought me back from the ledge. The USC game is this Saturday. As we all know, anything can happen.

You show me 5 more wins on this schedule and a 6-6 record to prevent Brew from being fired. 5 ranked teams and except for NU, all of our winnable B10 games are on the road. If I was a half-full person I would say 4 at the most.

I wholeheartedly agree.

If this thread saves just one life.......LOL

Really, I expect the Gophers to come out of the tunnel playing for their very
lives this Saturday. When that happens, anything can happen (and often does).

I've been watching college football for almost 40 years, too. And I've also lost count of the number of times a team has gotten embarrassed against a team like SoDak, and then gotten their dicks kicked a week later by a good school. I truly hope you're right, but I'd be laying off that bet if I were in Vega$

it's a terrible match up. personally I'd be looking for better secondary play next week, and growth leading to the big ten hoping to surprise some teams there. Its a long way to redemption if it can be done.
