My GH time has greatly diminished because I get annoyed by the constant threads pining for underqualified coaching candidates. I thought maybe I'd just start a thread for everybody to post their candidate so that we can keep it consolidated to this thread.

I'll start:
Anybody currently coaching D3 football
Anybody currently coaching D2 football
Anybody that last coached Arena football (Mike Hohenesee)

Isn't one of the Bowdens coaching D2 right now? They would be qualified. People get too hung up on qualifications. It is about hiring the right guy regardless of qualifications. They could hire a gas station attendant if he was going to win 9 games.

Maturi didn't get too hung up on qualifications the last time. That is how we got here.

*D1-FCS coaches.

*Coaches that struggle to make a bowl game playing a 7-game Big East schedule and 5 cupcakes.

*And my personal favorite: Mike Grant. Though I suppose any other coach with "good pedigree" at mega-high-school that has occasionally been competitive in the (former) Lake Conference against significantly smaller schools, all while successfully recruiting throughout the entire state of Minnesota will work equally as well.

Mike Grant is an excellent example of a non-candidate that shouldn't clutter the board with his own thread. Although, I guess he was able to recruit Willie Mobley to play at EP. Successfully recruiting Mobley is something Brewster couldn't do and keeping him eligible is something Sweatervest couldn't do so maybe Grant is better qualified than I initially thought.

The moment you try to make a post with Mike Grant in it the forum should discard it and log you out.

Mike Grant isn't a top 20 X's and O's coach in the state of Minnesota.

Me. I play a lot of NCAA 11. I'll walk around with a huge "Ask Corso" button installed on my assistant coach's back. Oh yeah, my assistant coach? Mike Hohensee. gold04, you can be my defensive coordinator since you knew our defense was going to suck and you love Mike. dpodoll can be quality control. It just seems fitting. Anyone else want to pen themselves into my underqualified coaching staff? We can just make up ridiculous positions because this seems far more entertaining than anything that is going on right now, or will be going on for the next x number of months.

If that were true--which it isnt--no coach in Minnesota has underperformed worse. EP consistently has the deepest most talentee team in the state because of their enrollment and the quality of their youth programs.

Grant wouldn't even be a top 3 x's and o's coach in Wright County let alone top 20 in the entire state which I'm assuming includes college & NFL from the way you phrased it.

Mike Grant would have tried harder to get other jobs- like assistant college jobs- if coaching the Gophers was ever his end goal.

I'll start:
Anybody currently coaching D3 football
Anybody currently coaching D2 football
Anybody that last coached Arena football (Mike Hohenesee)

I'll add:
Any coach who was dismissed from his team for hitting or otherwise harming players.
Any coach whose team was subjected to NCAA penalties for violations.
Any coach who has ever been referred to as a wunderkind.
Any coach w/o at least FCS/Non-AQ head coaching or AQ coordinator experience.

Grant learned at the knee of two masters--his father and Gagliardi--and his program really resembles St. John's in a lot of ways. You get a lot of kids on the team and you train them well in the fundamentals and by the time they are seniors, they are pretty good players. The development of the youth programs has created a feeder system similar to what Dennis Denning did with baseball in St. Paul. Great stuff.

That said, I agree that if Grant had wanted to coach above this level, he would have done some things differently career-wise. He's in a really good place and I doubt he goes anywhere else unless it's to his alma mater after Gagliardi leaves (if he ever does).

Everybody has their own gripe regarding the coaching prospect clutter on this board. For me, it is the mutliple threads related to Tony Dungy. People know better but they still can't help themselves. They start out their NEW thread with things like "I know he isn't coming here, but if he did..." Certainly he would be qualified but I swear my head is going to spin off my shoulders and explode if I see another T.D. thread.

I don't read any thread with T.D. in the subject line but I'm still annoyed by having to wade through/past them.

[before you investigative reporters ask how could I know how they start if I don't read them, I am saying this after having the misfortune of moving my mouse cursor over the threads where you can read the initial post]

I think my favorite thing was when the Tony Dungy virus mutated to a new strain and turned into "Well he never said he wouldn't be ATHLETIC DIRECTOR!"

Or "football director", whatever the F that is (I always thought this was the football coach...).

I still think there is a possibilty that Dungy may still come here. It could be a long shot but you can never say never. He might feel sorry for what's going on here and decide to make a difference.

I'm going to throw the Weber Myth Engineers(tm). I don't want them near any coaching decisions. :D

I can't decide whether you were agreeing or disagreeing with me when I said Grant wasn't a top 20 X's and O's guy in the state.

Actually, I think Grant is a top 20 X's and O's guy. I played for him before he went to EP. He was successful with some very smart, but undersized and undermanned (compared to the competition), football teams in his previous job.

He's a very good football coach, but that's obviously now magnified by the fact that he now coaches one of the largest and wealthiest schools in the state.

I also think he's more or less a tool who plays favorites and is very good at playing the political games with the powers that be in high school sports. I say this not only from some things I saw back when he was my coach, but from first-hand knowledge from a trusted friend who worked closely with him many years later. I don't have a lot of respect for him.

And he's nowhere near qualified to coach a D1 program, and anyone who thinks so is probably sniffing glue.

The football director is the same position as athletic director at the following schools: Alabama, Penn State, Michigan. I think there are others that I'm missing. At Iowa, I think the position is director of football and wrestling.

I will disagree with you that he is good at playing politics with the powers that be in High School sports. He is so bad at playing politics that his school was one of the schools that was hung out to dry by realignment. He has nearly every 5A coach in the state not wanting anything to do with him. I will say that he is GREAT at playing politics with the powers that be in the media. I don't know how he gets so much love from the media when everyone in his own profession thinks he is a tool. He has to do a heck of a job to get columns sympathetic to the EP position with all the natural advantages they have. The article about paying for non-conference games was hilarious. It is basically a complaint that EP has to pay a Minneapolis school 5k to play a game. The minneapolis school hires a coach for the money and EP gets sympathy. The paper fails to mention that EP has more freshman coaches than any Minneapolis school has for all four grades combined.

It is possible he is a better X's and O's guy than he currently shows because he doesn't work as hard as he used to. He did build Eden Prairie up from nothing into a state powerhouse. But it also very much correlated with the population explosion in EP. I watched them for many years due to who was in the old lake conference. I can tell you that if EP was in the South Suburban Conference, he would be the 4th or 5th best Xs and Os head coach in the conference. Eastview, Rosemount's teams are better coached than Eden Prairie. Eagan hasn't had results because of a lack of talent, but they are one of the better coached teams in the state. Lakeville south's Larry T is probably a wash with Grant at this point. Admittedly I don't know a whole lot about football coaches not from the Old Lake, Just haven't seen enough of them.

Probably should clarify on the politics part. I wasn't referring to his relationship with other schools. I think it's great that no other schools want anything to do with him. His arrogance has finally caught up with him.

I was referring to how he plays the games within his own school, and school district, to curry favor with the people he needs to.

I wouldn't doubt that he doesn't work as hard anymore, especially since he has a massive football staff now, but I know 20-some years ago, he was a good coach, even if I didn't (and don't) like him as a person. He was always a horrible teacher though too.

And he gets press because of who his dad is. Period.

I would imagine he is a terrible teacher. Good for the school for moving him to AD. At least no one has to suffer through an English class with him. Though him being the AD also has something to do with nobody wanting to play Eden Prairie in anything.

My bad. I misread that. I guess reading GH on my phone on the walk in to work is a bad idea.
