Maybe wishful thinking on my part but I would leap at least 8" if he announced he will retire at the end of his contract. Or sooner.

I dreaded the fact that Maturi would be doing the hire. But that is his job. Its not the end result as much as the process and how he mislead many fans. All he had to say is we will hire the best head coach possible with the resources we have.

This should be Jerry Kill's day to welcome him to Minnesota. But it will likely be the press ready to pin Maturi down. I hope he understands and doesn't take it personal. It will be interesting to see how Maturi trys to weasel his way out this afternoon.

Agreed.

Coach Kill is going to have to wear it today while the media take aim at Maturi. However, I'm sure he's been warned.

Also looking forward to Reusse's "Kill v. Brewster" article that I'm positive has already been written, with the exception of filling in the exact quotes from today's presser.

I like Joel Maturi as a person.
I also believes that he is as committed to the Gophers as any person on this earth.

Having said that, I think it would be in the best interest of the program if he were to retire at the end of his current contract. He has just accumulated too much baggage.

Agreed. Maturi seems like a genuine person, he is just in way over his head with this job. Time has come to move on in the AD department.

Anyone else see the cart before the horse analogy here? A new coach wants to see who his boss will be. The AD position becomes much more attractive if they get to pick their own FB coach in the very new future. By having Maturi make this hire we basically limited the pool of coaches attracted to the job as well as the pool of ADs when we post that position.

It's just awful that we let the lame duck Maturi make this hire, not counting that his last hire was pitiful to say the least.

I would set the odds of Joel Maturi being extended a new contract...

...at 500 to 1. He'll be allowed to gracefully announce his retirement next spring, effective when his contract is up in 2012.

He plaque will read: "Greatest non-revenue sports AD in history".

Basically, the problem is that Maturi is a phenomenal human being with an utterly correct understanding of what college sports are about. I'm being entirely serious.

The problem is that he's playing a friendly game of checkers with people playing chess.

All of this just makes me feel he can have the job for as long as he wants it. Bizzaro logic.

Kill's Welcome Day

Better to welcome Coach Kill, demonstrate some mental stability and look forward to better days. Wasted negativity gets us no where
