It's official: UConn loses appeal

UConn getting hit for academics is like Capone getting nailed for tax evasion. It is probably the least of the violations committed.

That may be true, but I'm glad to see they're at least getting hit with a postseason ban. That's the best way to punish a basketball program.

My perspective is different. I'd rather see the coach get nailed--be it suspension for a year, large fine (e.g. one year's salary), whatever. And if not that, then recruiting/scholarship limits that affect the coach going forward. To me, the post-season ban affects kids who signed on in good faith and pay a price--if not athletically, then in hassle factor--if they want to transfer to a post-season eligible program. You won't stop the garbage unless you hit the head coach where it hurts the most--and that's wallet and reputation. (And ignorance on the part of the head coach is no excuse. The coach has a ton of power, and if the coach creates a true culture of compliance--including being careful about who you hire, it won't be worth it for the assistants to cheat.)

Notwithstanding all that, I'm glad to see that the NCAA didn't just let it slide. I was afraid they would.

EDIT: I wrote the above remembering a prior infraction and forgot that this one was about failure to meet academic requirements. I can see a better argument for the post-season ban in this situation, although I still struggle with the concept that because players no longer on the team didn't graduate/make sufficient progress, current players should suffer. I'd probably prefer something like precluding players on the current team not making sufficient progress to be individually banned, and impose scholarship restrictions when the issue is players no longer on the team.

Curious to see how the appeal process goes with this one

I like what the NFL did in New Orleans...suspend coaches for a year (or longer), big fine and huge reputation hits plus fine the team. The kids didn't cause this, the coaches and schools did...make them pay.

The NCAA should start fining schools for not handling their business but not take away post season opportunities from the kids...just the money the school would get from the post season. Suspend coaches for a half season or season and make them carry an albatross going forward that if a school hires them and the coach cheats again, the school fines double or triple and maybe a 5 or 10 year ban on repeat offenders. Punish the coaches, the schools and admin, not the kids and the fans.

How is it not the kids fault for doing poorly in school?
