• On Buggs - it's a practice thing. What???

I don't want to make him look bad. What????

He's working, he's just got to get better.

I played the guys that I thought would help us win the game.

He's a good kid, just gotta keep working.

...
After this blow-out by Northwester...it's pretty hard to understand why Charles Buggs sits? (Knee problems) ...

If the team was playing well, I would understand this reasoning. When everyone on the floor looks terrible, I don't understand why some players don't play.

I think it's because we have a bad coach

I know I haven't been observing at practice so I can't assess blame...ah, what do I care? I'm going to go ahead and assess blame. And I blame Pitino.

Buggs...

I think the real question is... Is he actually going to practice?

Unless Buggs is playing hackey sack during practice, or coming up with fake pulled hamstrings during sprints, or falling asleep during film sessions, I'd sure like him to see playing time. Lots of playing time.

Boneheaded decisions possibly. He's been prone to those as we've seen in the past. Perhaps too many in practice to risk playing him.

Wow, the wisdom from GH.

It is too risky to play him. I'd hate to see the Gophers lose a game.

Buggs is in his 5th year removed from high school, yet still makes a number of mental mistakes on both ends of the floor. If Buggs was ever going to develop, he would have done so by now. If Pitino thought Buggs would help this team, either this year or next year, he'd certainly be playing him. I think it is far more likely that Buggs plays somewhere else next year (or simply graduates) than it is for him to see 15 min a game for the Gophers in 16-17.

Pitino should bench himself. His performance puts our RPI at one of the lowest points in the history of the program. He should look in the mirror and and realize he isn't qualified to bench Bugg's for poor performance. No matter how poor Buggs has performed it is better in comparison to his peers than Pitino.

Pitino should resign!

Buggs makes mental mistakes but so does the whole team. Buggs also shoots .429 from three point range and has the second best fg% on the team overall. He is the lowest in turnovers among the guys with a lot of minutes and he is the third leading rebounder. I have seen bad body language from Buggs in the huddles and maybe he is losing his court time to attitude issues. But he could help this team on the floor- no doubt about it.

I haven't watched much this year but did last year... and you are only noting one end of the floor bga1...Buggs often seems not be aware of what defense we are in....maybe that's it in addition to attitude.

And yet Konate still gets playing time.

I think we are going to see at least two transfers after this season...

Concur.

I'd set the over-under of currently rostered (scholarship) players absent from the 2016-17 roster at 2.5. I'd lean toward the over.

Yup. They look like zombies on the court. If we can hold on to Murphy, McBreyer, Dorsey and Buggs, we'll be ok. If we lose any of the three freshmen, the 2016-2017 return to respectability will be in doubt.

I am thinking we my lose 3 players to transfer in this order:

1. Diediou - he's never going to play
2. Buggs - I'm thinking he just graduates and transfers or stops playing altogether.
3. Konate - Lack of success in his development may push him to easier pastures.

Like a 27 yard field goal gone awry, gut-wrenchers that could happen:
1. Dorsey - not happy with team's approach not what he signed up for.
2. Murphy - Not being utilized to maximize his potential goes to better situation.
3. Gilbert - not getting enough playing time.

A lot of this could happen if they fail to win a few games and the season just degrades into depression.

From your list, I'd hate to lose; (in this order)

Muprhy
Dorsey
Konate
_________

Gilbert
Buggs
Gaston

Pretty fair bet, I'd say. I guess estimating the eventual number as the season progresses will give us at least something of interest as we watch each game.

It will be telling, The first real crack on Monson's tenure was when Stan Gaines left after getting big minutes. If any of Murphy, Mason or Dorsey leave, it will be a sign that there is trouble.

Spot on. Gaines was a guy Monson clearly liked, was getting a ton of minutes, was a productive freshman, and he still left for Seton Hall.

It still seems like a happy family, but the players can't be feeling good about the lack of success. If valuable guys do transfer out, I'd speculate that the main reason is one of the reasons for the fans' discontent: Pitino promised this fast-paced, full-court pressing, fast-breaking style of play, and we don't play it. This isn't what most of these players signed up for. And I refuse to accept that it's impossible to run the floor in the Big Ten. At least two of MSU's late baskets against us were them beating us back down the court, and one of them was on a made basket (!). You might have to pick your spots, but you can run and press in this conference. Iowa under Tom Davis pressed all the time.

someone needs to tell bad gopher that dr. tom hasn't coached at iowa in 17 years. using examples from the 90s when its 2016 doesn't help your case.

it is very hard to run and press in the big ten, as evidenced by the last 15 years.

You can't run and press if you don't rebound. This is the worst rebounding club in memory. Our inability to play even the most simple defense or block out on the boards- seems to eliminate the possibility of doing the other things Pitino wants to do. That's why I am so disgusted with the upper class guys who seem no better or no more interested in rebounding than the young kids. I don't care what athletic deficiencies King has. He is 6-9 and he should be able to hustle and block out and he doesn't do it with passion. That's leadership they need on court and are not getting. Morris seems to hustle- but he has other issues.

Certainly Gaston and Buggs are prime candidates. If that happens I want to see a 250 pound mean junk yard dog, juco rebounder come in. A pure shooter if there is one would be the #2 priority. We need toughness to add to Murphy.

No. I noted the defensive end- that's where he makes his mental mistakes. But the whole team does it. Witness the last game which he didn't play in. It was one giant defensive mess the whole game. There has to be some attitude issue where Buggs is not giving it his all in practice - pouting about his playing time. Because he has outperformed a lot of his team mates in actual game time.
