Isiah Thomas gets #8 player in the nation to FIU

Makes you wonder the recruiting success Flip could enjoy if he were amongst the college coach ranks.

That's only because no one else wanted him.

The book on Stephenson is that he's got a really bad attitude, yells at teammates, slacks on defense, doesn't work hard, his amateur status is in question and no one likes him.

A classic locker room cancer. No one else in the country wanted him, which is why he went to FIU. It's pretty sad really, for a guy that talented.

Yes, that's the book on Stephenson. But he's not the one going to FIU, so...

Have to give him credit. It sounds like Thomas is upgrading talent. If he can compete with with the likes of Duke and win at a school like that they will be successfull.

Ferguson (the prospect in the article) says: "It's just about the tremendous respect I have for Coach [Isiah] Thomas. Everybody wants to get to the next level and when you make a commitment it's about who you think can get you there. A lot of coaches can and do, but he's been there."

As a player, Thomas was obviously among the best of his time. As a coach and executive, he was among the worst of his time (please keep in mind he was a contemporary of Kevin McHale as an exec). IMHO, it's a bit of leap for recruits to assume this guy is capable of coaching them up to the NBA level. He couldn't even coach up talent already at that level (reference underachieving Pacer squads). Knowing what it takes to play in the NBA and being able to transfer that knowledge/teach that skill set to others are two entirely different things.

What are the odds that both coach and player are gone within a year?

I Think Thomas Will Do well At FIU

South Florida is a great location. Thomas has a great college reputation.
