Is there any way to bring in a respectable recruiting class this year?

If the Gophers can hire a coach by the first of December or so, is that enough time to put together a class that's in the middle of the Big Ten? If the coach has a big enough name it might be possible, but it seems like a long shot.

I hate the idea of waiting for someone in the NFL or college who won't be available until January. That said, it's much more important to get the right guy, than to make a hire based on a timeline. The dream scenario is Dungy, but I think most of us agree that is extremely unlikely to happen. Most of the unemployed college coaches who could start immediately do not do much for me with the possible exception of Mike Bellotti.

dream on

only if you are drunk on the gold and maroon Kool aid.

No chance. We will fire Brew and mess around for 6 weeks to hire a coach and get a bunch of 2 star recruits.

Our recruiting won't suffer too much because we don't have much to lose. The best of the bunch is Olson and he's probably committed to Gopher program no matter who the coach is. We don't have any 4 or 5 stars, and probably many of the three star players stay since many of them weren't recruited by major conference programs and this is there only chance to play in the Big Ten. Can't imagine many signed because of Brewster, but we could lose about 5 players and we should replace them with similarly promising players. Because this is Brewster's weakest recruiting class, the transition won't kill us, and if the Gophers hire a new coach early enough with name recognition, the recruiting class may actually improve.

catch lightning in a bottle, and its possible. Alvarez was hired Jan 2, 1990 and had two weeks to recruit. four years later, that class was the core of the 1993 Rose Bowl team.

Possible but unlikely. I'm curious to see how many possible defections from current commits there will be when (I'm not even saying "If" anymore) Brewster is let go.

Doubtful. The only kids that are going to be really interested are the Minnesota kids who want to play for Minnesota and kids that can't get better offers. Most of them want to know what type of system the coach is going to play, and that is always a question when you fire a coach..............or in Brewster's case, its just always a question.

And if we aren't going to get a decent class, I would hope the new guy wouldn't do what Brewster did and start handing out scholarships to just about anyone to simply fill up the class. If the current kids stick around and get some solid position coaching, we'll be no worse next year than we are this year (I know. I know.).
