It seems that Davis might have been attempting some slight attempts at "cocky" humor with this column, but it doesn't translate so well, just as a guy who thinks quite highly of himself. On top of that, I have a few issues with the way he does his "breakout sophomore" column:
1. Should we be that impressed with Davis that he's watched a handful of games during the players' sophomore season and is predicting they'll break out? Deliver that news before the games start, not when we can see the same thing he sees from the couch.
2. Speaking of evaluating from the couch. . .correct me if I'm wrong, but outside of Wake and Georgetown, it seems that all the other players listed by Davis have already been involved in games that have garnered national attention (Michigan St. vs. Gonzaga; Kansas vs. Memphis) or are involved in tournaments that garner national attention (Maryland, Syracuse, North Carolina, Vandy). How bout digging a bit deeper Seth?
3. Finally, when I take a look at his review of last year's sophomores, three things jump out: oily smugness about the players he got right; an unwillingness to concede that several of his players didn't break out; and no mention of sophomores who broke out that didn't make his list. For instance, when looking at his column from the previous year, nowhere do you see mention of players like Jajuan Johnson, Evan Turner, Craig Brackins, or Dejuan Blair. Surely these players outperformed some of Davis' picks, how bout a little humble acknowledgement of that fact?
