Iowa's Gatens out 3 Weeks

If Iowa wasn't pegged at 11th, they probably are now.

Per ESPN

They're going to struggle to win five games this year, and I mean total, not Big Ten.

South Dakota State, Louisiana-Monroe, SIU-Edwardsville, Idaho State, and who?

Could someone please change the thread title? He is out "indefinitely" and is having surgery on his non-shooting hand, which probably isn't that big of a setback.

Whether or not the injury proves to be season-ending is just one point. The bigger point is that the last thing this team needs is an injury to it's best player. They were going to struggle mightily even with a fully healthy Gatens. With an injured Gatens? Yikes, the prospects get even worse...

Gaetens could be back by home opener Nov 14th

But we'll still lose.

Truth is. ...

Iowa's probably better off long-term if Gatens is out for the season. They're going to stink this year anyways. They'd be better off having him a couple years down the road as a 5th-year senior when the program (presumably) will be in much better shape under McCaffery.

I don't know that Gatens is clearly their best player - maybe his play was diminished due to injury last year, but I wasn't real impressed with his play last season. It will be interesting to see if and how some of their sophomores (Eric May and Cully Payne in particular) have improved from last season. Payne had a great game in the Big Ten tourney against UM.

Iowa has got to recruit a lot better, because without the talent they're never going to be particularly good, and until they start to get better players there's not much reason to make strategic redshirts. They won't have the talent to make the NCAA tourney in any of Gatens' seasons, even if he redshirts and plays 2012-13. But again, he's not going to be out for the season, so the thread title is still very wrong.

"They won't have the talent to make the NCAA tourney in any of Gatens' seasons, even if he redshirts and plays 2012-13."

That's a pretty broad statement to make at this point. College basketball isn't college football. All it takes is a few players to start turning a program around, and sometimes it can happen quickly, if the chips fall right. I think it's reasonable to think Iowa could be a competitive program within the Big Ten by 2012-13.

Sorry, not buying Iowa. McCaffery offered a scholarship to a "Plan C" kid who chose Harvard over Iowa just days ago (Plan A was a kid from Missouri who opted for Cal over the Hawkeyes, Plan B opted to play at his hometown school, which was Western Kentucky). If things continue as they have been, they won't have enough good players on the roster at the same time over the next 4 years to make the NCAA tourney. McCaffery has to get a lot more talent than what he's got. Coach Fran has already lost too many recruiting battles to mid-majors and low-majors to expect drastic change in that regard.

Sorry about the title guys... How do I change the thread title?

OK, I guess the title can be wrong as long as the facts are in here somewhere:

Report from today quoted McCaffery and indicated Gatens would be out only 3 weeks, miss the first two games of the regular season but he is expected to play their 3rd game, which is part of one of the better early season tournaments against Xavier.

A broken wrist on the non-shooting hand did not stop Lou Hudson from still being one hell of a basketball player for the Minnesota Gophers.
