VandeBerg was Iowa’s leading receiver before he suffered a season-ending injury in practice after the first month of the season. Fortunately, VandeBerg was granted a medical redshirt, which brought him back for the 2017 season.

Another foot injury, however, won’t allow him to develop a connection with Iowa’s new quarterback. The Hawkeyes also have a new offensive coordinator in Brian Ferentz, who has limited options to work with at the receiver position.

Without VandeBerg, the Hawkeyes top returning receiver for spring ball is Jerminic Smith, who had 23 catches for 314 yards as a sophomore

Iowa loses Jaleel Johnson and Faith Ekakitie on the dline and has limited returning experience, and now those guys are banged up:

The Iowa football team had four experienced defensive linemen returning this season.

But for now at least, that number has been reduced to one: Parker Hesse.

At the Hawkeyes’ fourth spring practice Wednesday, the beginning of which was open to reporters, Matt Nelson was reduced to riding a stationary bicycle, his right foot in a large grey immobilizing boot. Nathan Bazata didn’t practice as he lets a lingering ankle injury heal. Anthony Nelson wandered the sideline in sweats, not a uniform.

Defensive line coach Reese Morgan, questioned about the absences later, wasn’t prepared to give a detailed injury report.

Anthony Nelson is listed as the starting left defensive end, with Matt (no relation) as his backup. Bazata, a senior, is the right tackle. That’s three big holes to fill in the Hawkeye defensive front this spring.
