Iowa Hawkeyes G.A. DJ Hernandez carries brother (Aaron Hernandez)-related burden

Really feel bad for the kid. He shouldnt have to deal with that mess. But since it is so much in the public eye, there is no avoiding it for him.

I used to work with a guy whose brother was a convicted serial killer. The killer had been caught many years before I started with the company. A guy that was at the company at the time said it was pretty awkward, because people would just look at him funny in the hall, and of course no one would say anything to him about it. And of course talk about it behind his back. I can't imagine going through that...

That is interesting and disturbing.

DJ also isn't the one on trial as awkward as his life will become if his brother is convicted, he will receive plenty of sympathy as well

It certainly isn't of the same magnitude, but I grew up in a small town in the 1950s and 1960s and the "sins of the last name" are a constant source of judgment. It was almost impossible for those who wanted to break away from the "family grades" instituted by the community at large to do so as they were always "that guy's kid." This is a bit different (and in many respects worse), but I really feel for Hernandez. He shouldn't be judged by his brother. The pervasiveness of the modern media ramps this up to a greater degree, making Hernandez "that guy's brother" outside his own zip code.

The other part of the article that kind of ticks me off is the explanation by Hernandez' mother that lays Aaron's rebelliousness at the feet of his father's death. I'm sure that was a difficult time for the Hernandez family and the rise of anger and abandonment issues is certainly understandable, but that alone doesn't turn someone into a murderer. Just another reminder that help is out there in a variety of venues and if you're feeling lost, go talk to someone.

Thanks for posting the story. I think it's a good reminder for all of us to deal with individuals on their own strengths and weaknesses as opposed to their bloodline.

BooHoo. He's probably not going to get much sympathy from Lloyd's family. Or from the dude who his brother shot in the face. Or from the two guys his brother blew away in the drive-by shooting. No, it doesn't mean DJ is a bad apple but it doesn't mean he deserves anybody's sympathy either.
