According to Rivals, Iowa has extended a grayshirt offer to Mark Alt.

Mark Alt is the son of former Hawkeye John Alt.

Question: Does Mark Alt play hockey for the Gophers or football for the Hawkeyes?

Go Gophers!!

Haven't the Gophs offered Alt in FB as well? Who's to say that it's either Hockey for the Gophs or FB for IA? I'm confused by the question...

Alt has one football offer, which is the one he received from Iowa this weekend.

Minnesota has not offered him a football scholarship and doubtful they will since they have tendered offers to quarterbacks J.D. Pride and Tom Parish.

He has received a hockey scholarship to Minnesota.

So the question remains, what does he play in college? Football or hockey?

Go Gophers!!

It's been stated that he's a potential first round pick in hockey. The Gophs haven't offered a scholly but offered a walk on i believe. His futures in hockey.

Pay your own way the first year, scholarship after that.

I don't really know a whole lot about Alt, have any of you guys seen him play?

I think it is pay your own way your first semester (fall 2010) and be on scholarship starting January 2011 as part of the 2011 recruiting class. Grayshirts could also just wait to enroll until January 2011. Either way, they get to practice in the spring of 2011, ahead of most of their recruiting class.

His dad is an Iowa football alum, so it doesn't shock me he's getting a scholly. He'd be a damn fool to pass up the hockey route, though, in my opinion. Which I will freely admit means absolutely nothing.

The question is: how much should Lucia raise his hockey scholarship amount?

No, I don't think we've offered him in football. He has been committed to the Gopher hockey team for a while (at least a year, or more?) so we never recruited him in football. I doubt Brewster would be too popular if he tried to out-recruit Lucia and try to get Alt to switch sports. Instead we recruited and got Parish.

But as time as gone along he has become more and more highly regarded as a football prospect. Considering his dad played for Iowa it's not a surprise they are going after him. Seeing as how the Gophers suddenly are below average in hockey now I wouldn't be surprised one bit if he goes to Iowa. But if he does, it's not something Gopher football fans should feel bad about. These were different circumstances where Brewster would have been in an impossible position, and we still are going to get a good QB in Parish.

I say just let him make the choice with what he has now. Most people would say he has more potential on the ice. He is a solid defenseman but I don't think he would be a monumental loss to the hockey program. I don't see him being the type of impact player that Bjugstad and Gardiner will be next year.

I think he is open to playing football, but has a partial offer for hockey at the U of M.

Alt

Mark has a great opportunity to get drafted in the NHL. Hockey is his best future no doubt. I would not consider Pride a QB at all. He was very lucky to get an offer- period!

After seeing both of them play, Alt extensively and Parrish only two games, Alt is a MUCH better passer. He was the primary reason CDH beat EP in the state championship game this season. Parrish could turn out to be a great QB, and with QB specialist Horton now on staff those odds increased, but as a pure passer at this stage you would have to favor Alts abilities.

I would agree with those who say Alt's career is brighter in hockey. I have heard that he may favor football, but he does have a higher ceiling in hockey. It will be an interesting decision.

I have heard that Mark's favorite sport is hockey, but his dad continues to encourage him to play football.

I am a little confused by the whole situation. I would think that it would be impossible for Alt to walk on to the Gopher football program. I always thought that players could not receive a scholorship from a lesser sport and walk on to the higher revenue sport. Therefore, if Alt plays both hockey and football for the U, he would have a football scholorship and technically be a "walk on" to the U. I could be way off, but does anyone have any clarification on this?

He won't walk on to the U for football unless he does not want to play hockey. With the schedule demands as they are now, you would have to choose one or the other. Hockey practice begins in early October, and there is no way Lucia would let him miss half the season.

He's either playing football somewhere else, or playing hockey at the U. Its now his choice which he would rather do, though as has been said many times if he wants a professional future, hockey for him is where it is at....
