SU Offensive Scheme??

Do we even know what kind of offensive scheme SU will run? The OC seems pretty elusive on that...how will that affect our Def prep and schemes in advance? Or will ee have to adjust real time and be ready for anything?? Isn't Spence a spread guy?

They have intelligently played the subterfuge angle and kept the U staff guessing as to which offense they will run.

Spence used to be the OC at both Clemson and Toledo, and Marrone the OC for the Saints, so I presume our defensive staff has been studying tapes of all three.

I would imagine their offense will be a blend of Marrone's and Spence's philosophies. The hard part for our staff is trying to discern which components of each will be used in the Syracuse offense, and properly preparing our D for it.

This is a good assumption. Coach Cosgrove mentioned something like this in the article recently posted to SI.com previewing a few opening weekend match ups. I quote from Stuart Mandel:

For Cosgrove, that's meant researching not only the Orange but: "Tennessee [where offensive line coach Greg Adkins and running backs coach Stan Drayton came from], the New Orleans Saints, Clemson, Toledo" and other schools where Syracuse's new staff previously worked.

"We're been preparing for a lot of different things," said Cosgrove, who remembers Paulus well from recruiting him while at Nebraska. "You can't get too fancy with what you want to do."

I've been reading up on Syracuse and this is the general feeling I get: they know they need more talent, much like we did after the 07 season. They already are starting and expecting contributions from several true freshmen and young players, (sound familiar? 07 cough cough)
They are working the recruiting scene like crazy and have a good start on a class for 2010 already, but as for this year, they are going to lean on what they can, hope that Paulus works out, and develop guys to contribute down the road. This has to play into the cloak and dagger secrecy they've had so far, if they upset us on national TV by suprising us with a few things early, it will be huge, but they know that straight up we can beat them.
Can't wait til saturday.

I expect we will be well prepared. The Syracuse fans seem pretty confident, but the funny thing is that the reasons that they have for their confidence are things that normally wouldn't be considered reasons for conflidence. A brand new head coach doesn't tend to bring instant success. And a QB who has never taken a snap? That might work out well down the road, but you generally don't have high expectations for the first game.

I am very worried about this matchup. Playing Syracuse in weeks 2-end will be much easier. One game of film should expose all of the talent deficiencies, but going in blind is a different story (weird formations, odd personnel combinations, etc.). Any type of gimmick offense will cause some problems.

I think the Gophers will really struggle on defense early. Hopefully they will be able to make the necessary adjustments and pull this one out. 0-1 would be bad.

I don't see why the Gophers should struggle on defense against a QB who is going to be quite rusty. I think if the game were played a couple weeks later, Syracuse would give us a better game than they will this Saturday.

I personally think the biggest key to this game is to take SU and their fans out of it early. To me, this is just just seems like one of those games where you could be asking for trouble if you let them hang around too long.

It's one thing to have a game plan, it's another to execute it. With so much new, and them relying on their game plan for an advantage, I just don't see a good outcome for them. It seems pretty similar to where we were at a couple of years ago.

This should be a relatively easy Minnesota victory over Syracuse.

1. We have real strength in many positions (Qback, D backs, Receivers, D Guards, Special Teams) and good skills and depth everywhere else.

2. A new O Coord. that seems destined for better things as judged by some of the best football minds around. If he is half as good as they say our offense should flourish.

3. 1 D coord that has been successful and is building from more strength than we have had in two decades. 1 D coord that is young and really seems to have worked well with this group.

4. Head coach that can sell manure to a shepherd. He has surrounded us with a significant uptick in talent and depth and very good group of coaches.

Everything is in place for this team to beat a total rebuild in Syracuse. If we don't spank the Orange, then folks, it's going to be one long, long year. I think not. We're more talented, deeper and more settled in our schemes. Remember we used the new offense in the last Bowl game, this should be huge in a first game. Those are the things that get victories.

Go Gophers!

If I recall correctly we did not use the new offense in the bowl game, the O-line coach was there for it but Dunbar was still the O-coordinator

i am sure that the gopher coaching staff has a good feeling as to what syracuse is running. i know that there is footage of the syracuse practices and scrimmages at the syracuse scout insider board.

i remember brewster's comments a while back about feeling good about the scout team readying for syracuse.
