Interesting WSJ story on how Bill Raftery prepares for a game

Raftery

He was HS A-A player in 1959. He played in NJ (Seton Hall or Rutgers, can't remember which).

Raf is the man. He loves the game of basketball, and it shows!

If I could select a 'dream' announcing crew to watch do a game, I think it would be Bilas, Knight and Raf. I don't think you'd even need a play-by-play guy, just let them go.

I think I would watch that group commentate on a third grade game... Hell, I would watch those three talk about people entering a super market if it was on television (you hearing me CBS?).

As soon as Bobby stops mentioning the ball fake 200 times a game, maybe I'll stop growing weary of listening to him do games. No one knows the game better than the General, but I think he's a case of over-analysis paralysis.

This.

He's just trying to prove how much smarter he is than everyone. It has gotten old.

That's not really a fair jab at Knight. He does occasionally take a break from ball fakes to note how rarely traveling is called.
