Interesting map

About the Data: It was provided by Facebook using estimates of support for the Football Bowl Subdivision programs, based on the share of Facebook users in a county who “like” a team. Facebook likes are an imperfect measure of fan intensity, including the fact that Facebook users may not be representative of the population at large. The results are also influenced by how intensely different universities cultivate their social media presence, and how widely Facebook is used by people in a given location.

In other words, this whole map is bunk. Cool to look at, but probably suffers greatly from accuracy issues.

Especially among younger people, Twitter and Instagram are becoming the preferred forms of social media. Facebook's popularity is waning rapidly. A prime example may be in S. California where you would expect college football would have significant fan base. Because of other social media, it looks like support is weak.

The article claims that the Badgers are more popular in Minnesota than the Gophers. Not only that, it claims that the Badgers are more popular in the Twin Cities and even on campus. This does not add up, for many reasons. If the Badgers were so popular in Minnesota, why are there so many Minnesota radio stations carrying the Gophers, but zero Minnesota stations carrying the Badgers? Why do we see so many Gopher shirts, but so few Badger shirts?

yeah once again with the facebook crap. I love college football but don't "like" it on social media because who the hell cares since all that's used for is to track you and promote ads. fun in premise, but no meaningful conclusions

This is a product of 50 years of really bad Gophers football. In the 80's Wisconsin would be similar. There were many years of really bad Wisconsin vs. Minnsota football games. If we go to the Rosebowl, if we continue to improve as a program, people will be interested. Look at Oregon, we could be that if we have some good years in a row to reinvigorate Minnesota's love of Gopher football.

I also wonder if it takes into account all the "unofficial" fan pages and groups. For every "official" page to like from the Athletics Department, there are a half-dozen fan-made pages. Or, people might like the Athletics Department general page (i.e. Gopher Sports) instead of a football-specific page.

Like others have said, I don't "like" everything I enjoy on Facebook. I did "like" every TAMU sport page because there was a promotion going on for doing so. What this really shows is who is pushing their social media harder.

Ridiculous.

According to this map........football isn't popular in Austin, Texas. Yeah.........ok.

OK, this is a different map from the one I thought. It's still got problems. It assumes that Facebook likes accurately measure whether people like football. The map claims that 4% of Minnesotans are fans of football, while 19% of Wisconsinites and 26% of Iowans are fans of college football. Is college football really 5 times more popular in Wisconsin and 6.5 times more popular in Iowa? they get more people in the stands, sure, but not 5 times as much. Some universities just seem to do a better job getting fans connected with social media.
