The Strange Story of Johnny Frederick

Through Baseball Grid review I came across Johnny Frederick. Making his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers at 27 in 1929, the guy raked.

52 doubles a Dodger record that stood until 2023 when passed by Freddie Freeman. Also 206 hits his first 2 seasons and averages of .328 & .334 respectively.

By 1935 he was out of the Majors. What happened?!?

Turns out a bit of everything. First off, only 16 teams so more competition.

The Pacific Coast League where Frederick was before and after his tenure with the Dodgers was much closer to MLB level than AAA is now, especially without any teams west of St Louis.

He was also a suspect fielder, had some injuries and his stats were probably propped up a bit by a "lively ball". Still a lifetime Batting Average of .308.

What's really crazy, is the 2024 Twins also had a 12 Game Winning Streak.

So between the 2 runs, they have JACK SQUAT to show for it in terms of post-season appearances even.

I remember after the Tigers run in 1984 that Bill James did a deep dive into teams with significant Winning Streaks correlate in general to teams with solid records to often Post Season success. The inverse would also be true.

I am really curious as to his viewpoints on the Twins anomalies.

The story of the 1899 Cleveland Spiders is wild. New owner took all of their best players and moved them over to his other team in St. Louis. They would go 20-134. Attendance was so bad that teams refused to travel to Cleveland so they ended up playing 112 games on the road.

Pitchers Jim Hughey (4-30) and Charlie Knepper (4-22) tied for the team lead in wins. They went 1-27 in September.

In this era of Load Management across all pro sports it's pretty remarkable that 5 played in 162 Regular Season Games this season:

Olson - Braves
Schwarber - Phillies
Alonso - Mets
Rooker - Athletics
De La Cruz - Reds

Another player did them one better, playing in 163 Games. Rafeal Devers did it by getting into the lineup 73 times with the Red Sox and then after being traded to the Padres another 90.

It's the 34th time someone has played in more than 162, the last being Justin Morneau in 2008.

Tie Breaker games (no longer a thing) counted in the Regular Season totals which was how Morneau did it when the Twins fell to the White Sox. It's how Maury Wills got to 165 in 1962 when the NL still had a Best of 3 Tiebreaker for the Pennant.

Also games that made it past the Official 5 innings but were tied and later cancelled due to weather, did not count in the standings, but the statistics did. It's how Tovar (164) & Killebrew (163) went beyond the normal barrier in 1967. Now games like that are framed "Suspended" and resumed at a later date.

I follow De La Cruz more than I normally would for a player on another team since he's on my keeper fantasy baseball team. He did not seem to be 100% the second half of the year. Was hardly attempting to steal bases and was just bad overall. Surprised he never got a day off, even if it's just one or two.
