We are playing lights out on special teams and defensive scoring which do not readily appear in the stats. But buried toward the bottom is one telling stat. We are 9-9 in the Red Zone. 6-9 TD. 67%. While the opponents so far are 5-8 or 63%. 4-8 TD, 50%

Another key stat we are converting 43% of third downs. Opponents 38%

Take a closer look, you can find something else to like

My personal fave is the lack of penalties. After two games, Gophers are least penalized team in Big 10. It makes a huge difference.

Thanks for the insight! Matt H over at The Daily Gopher is going to be jealous of your analysis. He does a great job with his models etc. but he missed what you did using just the data from gophersports.com. You are truly astute! But still not perfect.

A few more stats to ponder. All good stuff that really doesn't mean much at this point in the season.

The Gophers national ranking:

#6-Tackles for Loss
#9-Fewest Yards Per Game Penalized
#10-Fewest Penalties Per Game
#11-Sacks Allowed
#15-Tackles for Loss Allowed
#21-Red Zone Defense
#22-KO Return Yards
#34-Red Zone Offense

Thanks Bayfield - I will say the same thing to you that I said to Husker70 - Astute but not perfect (but pretty damn interesting). I think we all struggle with trying to be balanced in our analysis of games. Football is a game of mistakes and sometimes it is not who wins the game but who loses the game that determines the winner. These statistics may not highlight our mistakes but they do show that we are continuing to get better. I will take this at this point.
