For those who think being selected as a number 1 seed in the NIT is humiliating, I give you Indiana:

After finishing the season 17-15 and losing in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, Indiana wasn't expecting a bid to the Big Dance, but hoped for a shot at the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

Sunday night, two hours after the 68 NCAA Tournament bids were announced, IU was not selected for a berth in the NIT, either.

Fellow Big Ten foes Minnesota and Illinois both made the NIT, as did fellow in-state team Indiana State. Minnesota, who beat Indiana, was a No. 1 seed, and Illinois, who IU split with during the regular season and lost to in the Big Ten Tournament, was awarded a No. 2 seed.

IU opted not to play in the 16-team College Basketball Invitational, according to Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star, who spoke with IU Athletic Director Fred Glass. The CBI chooses teams who did not make the NCAA Tournament or the NIT.

Tom Crean wrote this on Twitter:

"We would have loved to be able to keep playing. Our determination and confidence was high. Our desire to improve has been strong."

They wanted to keep playing but declined the opportunity to keep playing?

BTW, there are 13 automatic bids in the NIT - teams that were their regular season their conference champions. (Belmont, Boston University, Davidson, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia State, High Point, Iona, Louisiana Tech, Robert Morris, UC Irvine, Utah Valley, Vermont, and Wisconsin-Green Bay). So many automatic bids this year means so many good teams who would've made the NIT in previous years get pushed to the CIT and CBI.

In theory, this should help a team like Minnesota win since it's against the 13,14,15 and 16 seeded teams had they made the NCAA's.

Do they really play a best of three championship in the CBI? Yuck.

Exactly. Nice comments by Crean.

Either way, why do you decline getting to play more games?

$$. The CBI requires you to guarantee/eat a significant # of tickets. It's a huge money-loser. IIRC, the Gophers turned down a chance to play in it in 2011.

Indiana AD Fred Glass says it wasn't related to money. ""Finances wouldn't be an issue if we thought it made sense. But we're Indiana. We don't play in the CBI."

I mentioned this elsewhere, but we also turned down the CBI in recent history, didn't we?

Ya, just a little indication of arrogance from Indiana.

How about just thinking about the kids. If the Boss is arrogant, so are the workers. Fred Glass is the epitome of arrogance with that statement.

From now on, INDIANA SUCKS!!!

Pride goeth before the fall.

That's true but I feel more sorry for Indiana State getting squeezed out of the NIT than I do Indiana. I know they lost two lottery picks, but a team with a lottery freshman big man and one of the highest rated point guards in the conference should have done better than 17-15. Indiana St, on the other hand, had a fine year but couldn't win the regular season or conference tournament because of Wichita.

Indiana St. is in the NIT.

OMG. Did he really say that? If so, what a ******.

Yes, you would be correct. Tubby and co. turned down the CBI in 2011... so arrogant

I guarantee you that was a Maturi decision. Do you know how much women's rowing equipment can be bought with what we would have lost playing in the CBI? That said, the end of 2011 was such a train-wreck (lost 12 of 13?) who really wanted to see them keep playing?

Like, I don't even disagree with his premise, but to actually utter it so arrogantly just makes me laugh.
