With all the time that's past, all the speculation, it would appear either no announcement will made until the season is over for some candidates. One who ended the season 9-3, Terry Bowden is at Northern Alabama. Joel has been on a southern tour and speculation about Dan Mullen arose. Could it be than trip was a twofure. Besides Leach, Bowden is the only other heavy weight Maturi could land. The others shrink by comparison. For those who talk about fit, or being Minnesota like, what is that? 40 years of no expectation, no results? When they have had to choose a coach too many times they looked for the face of the progam, the ablity to sell seats rather than hire a coach that can win. Winning programs have warts. Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Tom Osborne, Bobby Bowden, and yes Joe Paterno have all had espisodes that were either not flatering or down right embarassing. But they won football games. This is what the hire is about, winning football games. Winning puts fans in the seats, winning puts donners in line, winning shuts up the press. The fact that the search has taken too long, is frustrating. But settling for a less than qualified candidate is license to lose.

Excellent Husker

I agree.

Leach should be highly considered. And not dismissed due to the other "stuff". He wins and graduates players.

How on God's green earth is Terry f'in Bowden a "heavyweight"?

Eleven and 0 at Auburn when he was brought in when they were on suspension. Beat everyone in the SEC. He is now at Division II, and 9-3. 10-2 has been number 1 ranked in Division ll. He turned it around in no time. The man can flat out coach. Anyone that knows about football south of the Mason Dixon Line will tell you the good ol boy can coach em up.

Agreed. Along with this this hire will be part of Brunick's (sp) legacy along with either a pass/fail grade for the legacy of Maturi.

That itself suggests they are working real hard to find the right coach.

Undefeated with Pat Dye's players. His record got worse and worse the further removed he was from Pat Dye and his recruits.

With a team that went 12-2, 9-1, and 11-1 under a no-name coach in the 3 seasons before Bowden came. They also spent practically that entire time in the Top 5 nationally. I can't help but notice that his record gets worse the further removed he is from North Alabama's previous coach as well.

He turned it around in no time.

Turned what around? The Auburn team that consisted almost entirely of the previous coach's recruits, or the North Alabama team that lost in the national semifinals the year before he came?

The man can flat out coach. Anyone that knows about football south of the Mason Dixon Line will tell you the good ol boy can coach em up.

Sorry, husker. A guy with 2 division titles, 0 conference titles, and 0 national titles in the BCS can in no way be described as a "heavyweight". Call him what you will, but he is absolutely not that.

How long does it taken a major football power to hire a head coach? Take Notre Dame. How long did it take? Michigan? USC? Alabama? Florida? Nebraska. Miami is on the clock. They take a week or two, we need a month or two. They have a short list at all times. We have to hire a search firm, bring in Dave Mona, and spend time flying around the country. Its embarassing. We have lost a week right now on the recruiting trail. And you can bet every other school is using this time to bash Minnesota as having no idea of what they want, haven't gotten right in 40 years. Why would you want to go there?

Agree! First to fire last to hire.

Typically a coach is fired at the end of the season, so I might be fair to say the clock doesn't start until the season end. If don't have a coach by the end of next week, then I would start to worry.

Well, we didn't. We fired him weeks ago. North Texas has their coach and Colorado looks to have theirs.

If Colorado has hired who they are reported to have hired, are you sure you want to use them to prove your point?

For me, Leach is the bar since we know he is interested. I'm not tied to Leach, but if he is not the pick, then the guy they hire better be more highly regarded and as proven a commodity as Leach. Anyone else is unacceptable.

I want an announcement as much as anybody, but it's only been 5 days since our season ended and it's two MORE days until several prospective candidates' seasons end. Chill out with the "With all the time that's passed" talk. I'm giving Maturi the benefit of the doubt here and hoping he has a great big old rabbit to pull out of his hat.

I'd think that anyone and everyone should feel free to start worrying...quite a bit. This is badger joel maturi we are talking about. And Dave Mona is tagging along. And prexy b's limp is very severe. Yes, it has been time to worry during this entire process. I had always hoped that maturi would be gone before brewster had to be replaced. He should have gone with brewster. However, it went down the way it went down.

It is time to worry though, I fear.

Yeahhhhh.....why hasn't Stoops been hired? Kill? Sarkasian? Peterson? Haywood? Edsall? Riley? O'Leary? Malzahn?

This is embarrassing!!!!!!!

(husker...what do all of them have in common?)

I am not worried about this at all. I like pretty much all the names that have been floated by credible sources and it's playing out about as I'd expect. Everything close to the vest, hiring not coming until the end of the season for some of the premiere candidates. I think some of you are just impatient and it's manifesting itself in anxiety and frustration. I would like to know too but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Well put. I AM losing sleep over it, but the reality is that there's no reason to panic.

The guys that have been hired all have jobs too. You really think we have been waiting to talk to guys until their season is over?

He went 11-0, 9-1-1, 8-4, 8-4, 10-3, 1-5. He got better in his 5th year with not a single player from Pat Dye. He also took the team with Dye's players that had gone 5-5-1 the year previous and 5-6 the year before that. Dye may have had some freshmen or RS freshmen but the reality is he still developed and coached those players to much better records (something we criticized Brewster on here a lot for) and a near national championship (if not for the post-season ban). Players raw skill make up probably a third to half of the college football game, with development and coaching making up the rest. Can't take that away from him. Would we be happy with a 5 season span that included those records? How many times have we even been 8-4 or better in the last 20 years?

Teams fluctuate but if he is winning that number of games per year he has to have SOME coaching skill.

Turned what around? The Auburn team that consisted almost entirely of the previous coach's recruits, or the North Alabama team that lost in the national semifinals the year before he came?

Again, whatever coach we get will be taking over our recruits anyway so there's proof he can coach someone else's recruits in a tough conference/division.

I'm not pushing for him as a hire - his handling of the cheating scenario scares me too much and I think he'd use us as a big stepping stone and jump ship in 2-3 years leaving us scrambling to find a coach. We have the opportunity to get a guy who wants to be here AND can coach - Leach.

I'll take Joel before those yahoos at Save Gopher Football dot com.

MICHIGAN: Lloyd Carr announced retirement on Nov. 20. Rodriguez hired on Dec. 17. That's not a week or two.

FLORIDA: Ron Zook was fired in October 2004 before the season ended. Urban Meyer hired Dec. 4.

ALABAMA: Shula fired (EDIT****************) on November 26. Saban hired January 3.

What was your point again?

Ding, ding, ding....oops, wait, you're wrong.

Those guys still have a game to play in the regular season.

Who said those guys haven't been talked to? The point is they wouldn't be announced as coach until after their regular seasons were over...hence, freaking out is ridiculous.
