Rivals takes a look comparing the two jobs. THE VERDICT

Illinois went to the Rose Bowl in 2008, the Sugar Bowl in 2002 and with the Beckman mess, the next coach should have an extended timetable to turn the program around.

So it seems counter-intuitive to say that Minnesota is the better coaching job for the long-term but that's the opinion here. The Golden Gophers can recruit in-state talent, they have neat rivalries with Big 10 opponents and a relatively new stadium. Plus, even though it doesn't get all the Minneapolis talent, having that recruiting base makes the Minnesota job more appealing.

"If you just go off without thinking, Illinois or Minnesota, you think about the glory days of Chicagoland football, Rashard Mendenhall and that group, going to the Rose Bowl," Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell said. "It seems counter-intuitive based on a quick thought. Digging deep into it, Minnesota is in much better shape for a lot of different reasons."

And he came to that conclusion without even mentioning the groundbreaking of the new facilities....

No one mentioned that the President and Board of Regents at UI keep getting removed for admissions corruption.

and no one mentioned no AD at Minn

that depends on the coach. the coeds at Ill are drunker and looser than at Minn. whether for personal consumption or recruiting.
But, the ice fishing sucks at Ill. And, there are more FIBs in Ill

Ill averaged about 61K fans during the 2008 rose bowl year. last year they averaged about 38K. It's been dropping every year. Ill has a couple of rebuilding jobs a new coach would have to take on

Illinois has 7 division 1 football teams and Minnesota has one. Champaign is out in the middle of nowhere. Minnesota is the better job.

Seven D1 schools in Illinois aren't the problem for the Illini. The state's talent base in the Chicago area is regularly plundered by Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa. The carcass is pretty well picked over by the time the U of I comes around.
