These three teams have pretty comparable schedules to start out the year, and the teams take up the 3, 4, and 5 spots of the BT conference rankings.

Illinois has started the conference playing games against four top 25 ranked opponents (if you include when MSU was ranked) - OSU, MSU, and Wisco at home and @Wisco. They were able to pull off two wins at home against MSU and Wisco, and lost away at Wisco and at home against OSU. A tough loss to Penn St. away has also indicated some weakness in the team's ability to get boards on the road and control the ball. All-in-all, Illinois is off to a 4-3 start in BT play with games against Indiana, Penn State, and Northwestern coming up.

On the other hand, the Gophers are off to a 5-3 conference start with all their losses coming on the road to top 25 opponents (again, including then-ranked MSU) - @MSU, @OSU, @Wisco. They earned their first top-25 big ten win when they beat Purdue at home. But they have lost 2 team members, in a knee injury to Mo Walker and a foot injury to Al Nolen. That being said, the Gophers showed poise and an ability to bring the ball inside and finish against the Wildcats, while stepping up their perimeter D by switching to a 2-3 zone against the Wildcats and holding them to 30% 3-point shooting (something the Gophers struggled with in non-conference and some conference play).

Wisco is also off to a similar start in the Big Ten with a 5-2 record, with their 2 losses in away games to top-25 ranked BT teams (MSU and Ill.). They have two top-25 BT wins, beating Illinois and MN at home.

What do people think about this situation? As most of us predicted at pre-season, the 3-5 spots would be up-for-grabs by these three teams, but with Purdue showing some weakness and Penn St. vying for a spot, you have to assume that these spots aren't a sure thing, and even that these three teams aren't going to necessarily end up in the 3-5 spots. But, astonishingly, each of these three teams has performed at a very comparable level (losing tough away games, but also winning some tough homes games).

Wisconsin has the toughest remaining schedule - playing both OSU and Purdue at home and away.
Illinois has the second toughest schedule, with 3 away games against Purdue, MSU, and OSU.

But the Gophers aren't in the clear. Injuries have forced new lineup - with the current starting rotation (likely will change on a game-game basis) being Hoff, Williams, Mbakwe, RSIII, and Colt. And the once deep bench will now likely rely on freshman for over 20% of the playing time.

When all is said and done, where do you think the three teams will end up in the rankings? A lot of us thought Minnesota would end up 3-4...has that changed? I personally see us with the potential of ending up in the 3 spot, but a lot of that is going to depend on the outcomes of the Wisco matchups and how well the Gophers can compensate without Nolen against the better teams of the BT. We got a glimpse of our ability on Tuesday without Nolen and Walker.

It's gonna play out like this (I think):

1. OSU
2. Purdue
3. Minn.
4. Wisconsin
5. Illinois
6. MSU
7. Penn State

And the other 4 teams...who knows? Probably Northwestern, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa in that order...but to be honest, between Michigan Indiana, and Iowa it's just as much of a toss-up as the Illinois, Wisco, Minnesota dance.

If I had to guess, based on how the teams are playing now:

Purdue finishes 14-4, losses at Wisconsin and Illinois
Wisconsin finishes 13-5, two losses to OSU and a loss at Purdue
Minnesota finishes 12-6, losses at Purdue, vs Ohio State, and one of the roadies/home vs MSU
Illinois finishes 11-7, losses at Minnesota, Purdue, MSU and Ohio State

Purdue can really muck things up if they can win in Madison and/or Champaign. But after the egg they laid the other night I don't really trust them on the road.

This also highlights the importance of our showdown with the Illini. That could be the difference between a 4th and a 5th place finish.

Given the depth now (w/o Nolen, Walker and Joseph), it's a major stretch to predict #3 IMO. That was one game last night. After several more games the starting 5 last night could quite exhausted - especially Blake. When a pure shooter gets tired, the shot starts falling on the front rim. Hopefully Tubby uses the freshmen a little more to spell some of them.

I totally agree that bias went into that ranking - realistically, we're a 4 or 5. Like G07 said, the Illinois games and probably the games against PSU are going to be tough (considering the guard-play), but Purdue and Wisco have tough schedules too, and we are looking good against MSU due to their reliance on inside play w/o Luscious.

Had to stick my neck out for the Gophs though :D

If Gophers finish 12-6 or even 11-7 with the roster they have now, Tubby should be Big Ten Coach of the Year, though I suspect that honor will go to Matta. But no complaints here if Matta gets it. Hard to argue with the coach who by all appearances is going to run away with the title.

This sounds about right in my opinion too if I had to guess, nice break down. Obviously, things never go as planned though in the Big Ten. The Illinois game will be a big one; I'm glad it's at The Barn!

Agree with this. But to quote the inimitable Dan Rather, ""This race is tight like a too-small bathing suit on a too-long ride home from the beach."

I think how effectively Tubby uses the freshman and paces this thin roster for the rest of the year will be how he personally is evaluated for this season. Not much room for error.

After the Indiana upset over Illinois I reiterate that the Gophs are gonna be 3 (hopefully). We gotta see how Wisco plays on the road, but we actually have a shot at 3 and maybe even 2! Go Gophs, eh?

A healthy Minnesota is the best of the 3, Wisconsin is 2, and Illinois is 3.

will be interesting to see if that holds true for an unhealthy Minnesota team. I think Wisconsin ends up finishing the best of those 3 now.

Purdue finishes 14-4, losses at Wisconsin and Illinois

You think Purdue is going to beat OSU?

When I break down the remaining games individually I have:

OSU 18-0
Wisconsin 13-5
Purdue 13-5
Minn 11-7
MSU 10-8
ILL 10-8
PSU 8-10

However, when I think about the season as a whole, I really don't think that OSU is going to go undefeated this year. They're going to drop a game or 2 yet. @Wisc, @Purdue, @Minn, @PSU and even vs.Michigan, if they shoot the lights out, is a tough gauntlet to go undefeated.
