Illini 2-minute drill

Bright moment: Wide receiver Malik Turner was examined at a local hospital as a precautionary measure, a team spokesman said, before he was released. He returned to the locker room. "Seeing him in there was kind of a bright moment in a dark situation," quarterback Jeff George Jr. said. "You hate to see a guy go down like that." Turner's injury highlights the thin receiving corps. He has been the main receiving threat this season, leading the Illini with 523 yards on 35 catches. Justin Hardee, the second leading receiver, has just 12 catches.

When will Wes Lunt return? Coach Lovie Smith said his starting quarterback is closer to returning. Lunt was in uniform on the sideline Saturday for the first time since he suffered an apparent back injury Oct. 8 against Purdue. Smith said even if pressed Lunt would not have been able to play against Minnesota. Lunt missed five games in 2014 and another three games this season.

Field position problems: Of their 16 offensive drives, Minnesota started in Illinois territory on seven. Three of those started with an Illinois turnover and the Gophers scored on five. Two others started on the Minnesota 46-yard line and the 50. The Gophers average field position started on their 47.

That's part of the identity of the Claeys/Sawvel defense. Limit big plays, sure tackling, and turnovers.

Illinois didn't make it easy for the Gophers with turnovers. The Gophers forced the turnovers and made it damned tough for the Illini!

LOL. Yeah we forced the center and qb to drop the ball. That first quarter was sloppy football by both teams. They were just sloppier and gave us a huge advantage that luckily we took because we weren't scoring points without their turnovers.
