Illini DT Chris Jones arrested for hate crime/assault, prior coke arrest disclosed

Yikes. Doesn't sound like the type of kid you want to be bringing into your program. And why would Zook not know about the guilty plea for possession of cocaine? Is it difficult to do these background checks when you are recruiting high school athletes?

I'm not too surprised they don't do it before offering -- oftentimes these recruitments happen in a whirlwind. Rivals says he visited Illinois on 1/28 and committed on 2/2 so I would say that is pretty quick/last minute. I would hope that it is common practice to require a background check before they matriculate.

Zook's comment has some ambiguity, and it is not clear whether he knew about the cocaine possession after he signed or if this was the first he heard about it. If it is the first time he heard about it, I would say shame on him.

You have a lot of problems when you stop your car to attack two random people whom you've never encountered before. If I were Zook, I'd admit my mistake recruiting this guy and cut him loose.

Jones said that one of the guys "jumped him" the week before. I don't know if it was the 145 pounder or the 160 pounder, but I'm guessing it was neither.

We unwittingly signed a prison-bound felon a few years ago out of St. Louis.

File under "Whoops".

Cocaine possession is a victimless crime, like punching someone in the dark.

If he was under 18 for the coke arrest that kind of info wouldn't be available to Zook if the offense happened in Minnesota, not sure how juvenile records are exposed in Illinois or wherever this kid is from. This all depends of he got tried as an adult or a juvenile, too. If he got tried as an adult, well, it's Zook. What do you expect.
