After seeing the first 10 games of the season, we are starting to see a decent sample size of Asuma's freshman year.

Some observations (they can change, but are grounded in reality);

  • The Gophers will be at or near the bottom of the Big Ten, and he can't crack the starting lineup for terrible team, that will have a massive turnover in the roster going into 2025-26 (CBJ is clearly coaching for his life and playing older players with more in-game experience) ***editing the original post***he should be starting but for some reason he isn't***

  • Asuma averages 4th most average minutes per game (27.1 min), 3rd most amongst guards, but that may be reduced now that Mike Mitchell is returning
    • only behind Garcia, Patterson & Odukale (all of which are SRs)

  • Regardless of whether a coaching change happens or not, next year will need to be another heavy portal year due to the current roster being SR heavy. Current coaching regime has not had any real success in the portal, does Asuma want to waste his sophomore year in the cellar as well?

  • His family is important to him, which was one of the reasons he chose Minnesota, so proximity matters...but there are other decent basketball schools within a few hundred miles (but due to his lack of real solid basketball this year, it will hurt his portal options) - would Iowa State take him based on this years performance versus other HS recruits and older Portal options...

He gone!!!!! I would be. He seems like a Iowa State type player

I would think he sees who the next coach is before making a decision. The fact that everyone already assumes we will be in cellar next year is the problem with what is happening here. If everyone just assumes with johnson we will be a last place team every year, then we need to change coaches. Cant recruit any good guys with this perception. Can only imagine what kids hear on recruiting trips to other schools about Minnesota. There is no excitement with this program. Attendance is down. I was hoping that having a senior laden team might get us over the top, but after i watched last night, i cant see many if any wins in the BIG!

I think he'll stay if re-recruited by the next guy and if he feels that the next guy is a fit.
His brother is coming here. My guess is even with Ben, he will be starting before long.

You have a bad take on Asuma. Realize that his brother just signed to play baseball at Minnesota. Asuma, like Christie, will continue to get better as the season goes on. If you listened to the TV broadcast you heard the announcers recognize Asuma as a legitimate Big10 player whom they wanted to become more aggressive.
It will be very surprising if Asuma, like Tschetter at Michigan, doesn't show exceptional loyalty to Minnesota. Some kids aren't about chasing piles of cash.

Point to a spot in my post that says he isn't a good player...

Feel like your poll is missing the actual answer - Make decision on transferring once he knows who the new coach is going to be.

Asuma is not starting but is getting starter minutes and that isn't likely to change even with Mitchell back. Cochran could be a different story if/when he is finally healthy.

I would assume there’s a new coach - if not, then he’s likely a big reason for the performance being good enough to retain the current one. I’m going to ignore that scenario as unlikely.

The new coach will have to re-recruit him. Asuma can probably see without entering the portal what his worth is for NIL (including what DTA would offer). Then he has to weigh the other variables like fit, family, and what gets him to his goal of playing professionally (which every player thinks they can do). My guess is there’ll be some tempting offers if he goes portal.

He should give Jamison a call. Once Jamison realized the ship has no rudder he bailed.

Asuma is a true FR from a Class 1A school - and he's playing significant minutes at a major conference program.

Hey, he's good - but we're not talking about Cooper Flagg here. coming out of HS 247 had him as the 107th best recruit nationally. and most observers felt he would need time to become accustomed to the speed and physicality of the college game. I could argue that he's already ahead of schedule.

the next coach is going to tell Asuma that he is the future of the program. as long as the NIL and revenue-sharing money is decent, I think he stays.

You people actually believe that valuable players go to teams because of the coaching??

Well...it's only entertainment. If burying your head in the sand gives you hope...it's okay.

If Asuma becomes a valuable commodity...he's gone. Simple.

Do you understand the allegiance of family and the culture of being Finnish? I don't believe money will play much of a part in what Isaac decides to do.

Are you a BADger fan? Get off our Gopher site, dude!

He also might follow Ben to Normandale CC. Ben won’t be the head coach there but he’ll have the connection to Asuma that might get him to follow?

He should transfer to KU. Easy drive from Minny, awesome campus, great program and one of the best coaches in college BB
