If we have to "give him a chance," it was a bad hire....period.

We have way too much good at the U for this to be the best we can do...Maturi and Bruininks screwed us because they know nothing about football or running a big time program.

Lets pray these two a-holes don't give this guy a big contract that leaves us screwed for years to come like they have done so many times before (Mason, Monson).

Sad day for Gopherland...this is the equivalent of us hiring Ricardo Patton as our BB coach...and if you don't know who he is...thats my effing point!

I agree, if we gave him more than a 3 year deal or 1 million per year, I will choke on vomit. I was hoping maybe we are trying to save some money for the next hire. Thing is, if we wanted to do that, we already had Horton. Not sure Kill is any better than Horton, but I guess we'll see.

Maturi has some explaining to do. How many people said "No", and how bad of a salesman is he? We didn't have to wait almost two months for Jerry Kill. Kill would have taken the job the same day Brewster was fired.

We sure as heck didn't need to fire Brewster mid-season for Jerry Kill. At least we could have kept Brew around to let him do the one thing he could do which is try a recruit.

I'm sure the conversation went like this.

Joel: Hi Jerry, would you be interested in coaching the U of MN?
Jerry: Yes. I;ll take the job.
Joel: It comes with a 400% bump in pay.
Jerry: (the guy is probably still speechless)

Its true. The whole "give him a chance" concept does mean that Maturi failed, but it is no excuse to not give Kill that chance.

"Give him a chance" doesn't mean it was a bad hire. It just means that some people are upset because their prefered coach wasn't hired.

I's sure Maturi choose Jerry Kill over Jim Harbaugh or the like.

If you think a big name coach would come to Minnesota you are kidding yourself. Minnesota is not Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, OSU, etc.

After all, we are Minnesota!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but you are wrong.

"Give him a chance" doesn't mean it was a bad hire. It just means that some people are upset because their prefered coach wasn't hired.

In the context of "Tubby like hire" and "Couldn't believe he was interested", if you are begging for patience, then this is an epic failure. In the lens of outside those comments, then you may be right. Why couldn't Maturi just keep to the tired old quotes? "We will interview and hire the best candidate"? How hard is that?

Exactly. There was no way everyone was going to be happy with it, regardless of who was hired (and the man hasn't even been officially hired yet!). People will always find something to bitch about and this process has certainly proven to be one of those cases. When that happens, you have to "give the man a chance" because you would have had to say it regardless, even if it was Mike Leach who was hired. I'm quite sure there would have a very vocal group of folks bitching about that hire as well, they simply aren't here because we didn't. "Give the man a chance" doesn't equate with failure. It equates with what a new coach deserves.

Tell us who the people are who are thrilled because Kill WAS their preferred coach.

To much good at the U???

Obviously the coaches you wanted didnt agree with you!

With all the good things you think are here and another $2.5 million reasons a person might come coach wasnt enough- What does that really say? It says something...

I will take the nerdy looking guy who can coach. The Gophers are not going to get 5 $tar recruits here no matter who the coach is.. So we need a football coach who can coach and coach up the talents he has... Brewster couldnt coach..

Thats just a reality.. I wish Harbaugh would come here or Bosie State's coach would come here. I also wish the Twins could trade Nick Punto for Felix Hernandez but it aint gonna happen... Thats just reality.

I would guess that the majority of the peps preferred coach (Harbaugh, Peterson, Patterson, Belotti, etc) nixed Minnesota. And those who thought we could land one of the big names were kidding themselves.

Coach Kill was always my preferred second tier choice because of his track record.

It is simply begging people to use reason.

This is total garbage. Last time we had Lane Kiffen, Charlie Strong, and Bo Pelini all wanting to come here.

It seems that all the Maturi apologists and Kill rationalists are assuming that Maturi actually made offers of 5 years at $2.5 mil per to the top tier coaches...we have NO EVIDENCE that Peterson, Patterson, Edsall, Golden, Mullen, Hoke or any other coach was offered anything, much less offered this type of package.

All of you seem willing to assume that these top coaches turned down top offers...for all we know Maturi as offering crap and they laughed at him.

I want one coach or Maturi to come forward and say they turned down a 5 year, $2.5 mil per offer from us...they wont because it didn't happen.

Maturi effed this up and we got stuck with a MAC coach with 3 years of D-1 experience...and for the love of god, don't tell me to look at Tressel...with tOSU's budget, effing Mason would be in the hunt for National Titles every year.

Says the guy who told us Edsall was coming with his entire staff.

So it's ok for you to assume that we didn't get turned down by a lot of top tier coaches, but it's not ok for other to assume we got turned down by them? Ok, gotcha.

You have no idea how many coaches turned us down. The only thing we know is that Kill is our head coach. He's not what most of us preferred, but it's just stupid to act like the hire was a failure before the guy has even coached a game here.

+1001

So... any team that hires a guy that isn't one of the handful of nationally known college coaches is a bad hire? Everybody starts somewhere, amigo.

I didn't say we didn't get turned down...we did. I want to know what Maturi was offering that they said no to. We are already starting to hear leaks from guys that said no about how this search was ran...and it will get worse. I think when this is done...we are going to look like bigger laughing stocks...if that is even possible.

Maturi should not have been running this search.

Somebody has an overinflated view of the University of Minnesota football program.

If you think Jerry Kill is the football version of Ricardo Patton then you are clueless.

To those of you that think that the program couldnt attract big name coaches you must have forgotten Leach was asking for the job last week. You all said that we didn't want him because you figured Maturi had someone better in mind. Real Cool.

So, now Reason means "do not listen to me."

It is simply begging people to use reason.

Great only those who love the hire are reasonable, everybody else is out of their minds. What ever you say. Way to read half of my post.

Exactly. Maturi lost all credibility with his last hire...there is no room for a "give him a chance" hire anymore. We deserve a Tubby-type hire, and that is what Maturi said he would deliver. FAIL!

You guys must have low expectations if Mike Leach was the big name you had in mind.

Of course he was asking for the job ... nobody will hire him right now.
