I would assume all of this years seniors would get their year frozen and get an extra year?

How would they handle the extra incoming recruiting class, expanded rosters?

I would imagine some players would choose to move on, but we'd potentially have a log jam.

I am sure the powers that be are discussing all the various scenarios but it is way too soon to get overly concerned about issues like this. Hopefully things will clear up some by summertime and we will be good to go in the fall for football season.

Hopefully this is true. Need to do the social distancing everywhere though to be successful however.

Nope, they now have proven anti-virals that provide massive protection if taken for 5 days. Plus, patients with respiratory failure requiring respirators are almost all either diabetic, pre-diabetic or morbidly obese. These people need to protect themselves. Young football players can take the anti-viral drug and we can all watch them play.

I know which drug you speak of. How soon do you think we can get FDA approval for that use?

It's already approved, we need massive production, and this is the beginning of the end of the pandemic...unless you are fat and diabetic.

I welcome the non COVID question. Too bad the thread got taken there in post 2.

I think the NCAA has already “frozen” spring sports athlete’s timetable (unless I dreamed that) so it would go to reason they would do the same for Fall sport athlete’s if those seasons are cancelled.

Roster size? I would think they would have to expand it for 1-year, but it is the NCAA so logic may not be used in that decision.

Proven anti-virals? That is not correct.

You’d have to expand it for five years. Otherwise you’d be stealing a year from the other four classes that won’t be seniors this fall.

And this says nothing of scholarships. The NCAA just approved that any senior choosing to come back for the extra year can be given any scholarship amount and it won’t count against the limit.

But Coyle told spring coaches he’s choosing not to allow them to do that. “Extra seniors” will be forced to pay their own way.

If the season is lost, I would think there certainly will be a decent number of seniors, RS juniors, and juniors who will graduate and move on to the next phase of their lives.

I think this would be incredibly interesting to see how the NCAA would handle this for a major market sport. They have set precedent now by granting an add'l year eligibility for spring sports (haven't read full release, this is just what I've heard) but this is a mammoth different in the scope, scale, and money involved.

As an aside, these threads always manage to bring out the tinfoil hat folk.

I would guess very few seniors would stick around for another year. Schlueter, Olson, Green, MDT, Schad, Durr just to name a few off the top of my head. These guys have already been in college for 4, 5 or even 6 years in the case of MDT and Durr. I would imagine most will see if there's a spot for them in the NFL or move into the next phase of their life.

I would hate to see Durr not get another year in a Gopher uniform, whichever uniform combination that may be.

Paging Jamal Harris. I also remember this gem vividly...

He kept looking back at the holder (not exactly a burner), like he was worried about being caught from behind. Jamal must not have had confidence in his speed.

Hope Jamal does not have to live this his whole life. He made a mistake just like all of us do.

I know I read an article about Gopher Softball pitcher Amber Fiser returning. Her coach said that they do not get any exemptions on scholarships - so the available scholarships have to be divided among all new and/or returning players. that means for softball and baseball, players could wind up getting smaller scholarships. (spring sports can divide scholarships - players could get a half-scholarship, etc.)

That is going to be complicated.

so, is this a rule for the Gophers only, or is this NCAA wide?

If the Gophers are imposing this on their own, it would certainly seem to be a competitive disadvantage.

I gotta think sometime this summer if things keep going the NCAA will issue new guidance / rules.

On the other hand the NCAA doesn't pay for these things so they could inadvertently hose some schools bad if suddenly school's with money can stack up the scholarships and schools who can't afford it now are behind the ball on scholarship limits.

I think most have forgot/don't care that he fumbled the block punt. Because well...its Gopher football.

The U has apparently decided not to increase the number of available scholarships for spring sports. I haven't looked, but I would guess that many athletic departments facing the same unexpected budget deficits will do the same, but I am sure that there will be some that take advantage of the rule and provide for the additional scholarships. Yes, that certainly could provide for some competitive advantages.

It will. Southern and western schools take baseball and softball very seriously. Baseball is even a third profitable sport at some of those schools. Big stadiums, tailgating, several thousands attendance.

Gopher baseball isn't likely to be nationally competitive, but softball absolutely is. Damned shame that Coyle won't let them be on a level playing field against SEC schools who I guarantee will fully fund softball to the maximum extent allowed.

So, we should not be thinking about gophers football and therefore should not be on, much less posting to, a gophers football message board?

... they're not going to dose players with anti-virals just to have people play football (especially the ones that have shown some success on COVID 19). Get real.

They're testing straight HIV meds on this thing. Not drugs that you can just take casually without noticing side effects. Get the misinformation out of here.

Hey chief, every visitor to the Congo starts taking anti-malaria drugs. Your excess caution and imperative mood are not helping. They are going to destroy the country.

"it is simply crazy not to recognize that the Wuhan virus, like flu viruses generally, is mostly dangerous to people who are vulnerable because of age and infirmity, and to tailor our response to the disease accordingly. "
