do you think there would be this much uncertainty and consternation surrounding the football program? My answer is no. The media in this town feeds people's frustrations (mine included) with the garbage they write and the continuous bashing of Brewster. It takes quiet time to put it all in the proper perspective. The guy has been here only two full years, we knew he didn't have much experience, we knew we were going to have to be patient, yet many are calling for him to be fired. He signed a five year contract, if he was going to be evaluated after three years, then that's the length of the contract he sould have been offered. I'm behind Brewster 100%. Let him finish the job he started.

You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore.

Only two full years?!? Are the revisionists already erasing the 1-11 season from the history books?

No, but his point is still valid. And he has only had two full recruiting classes, and our current situation is detrimental to this year's class.

Dan Monson was never kicked around this way, even at the end. Obviously he was given a huge amount of slack early and with good reason. But even in what were very disappointing seasons in 2004 and 2006 after his slack had been used up, he was never as unpopular as Brewster is right now. I can't fully explain it, but it certainly has to do with the fact that he never went around blowing hot air like Brewter does, and that generally his teams seemed to have a clue on the court, though his offense was perplexing at times.

Brewster Can See Through

Brewster can see through the phony people that call themselves the media :pig: and won't kiss their ass. I say it's time to kick some teeth out and break some noses. :banghead:

No way. Our media is nothing if not passive agressive and generally brutal.

There is a better chance that someone in the media just pulled this Kansas thing out of their ass, and the rest of the morons gleefully ran with it than there is that it is actually the truth.

Reference the recent "Brewster just put his house up for sale!" story from last week.

It would be better if people just didn't listen to the media when it comes to opinions and all. When someone in the media starts something with "I heard from a reliable source that..." I pretty much ignore it because half the time it ends up being false.

Dan Rather-esque

This whole thing reminds me of the Rather-gate thing with 60 minutes 2 and the Bush physical. The media loved the story so much, they *wanted* it to be true, it was too good *not* to be true. Alas, for them, but it was not true.

There really is nothing wrong with the TC media that forced retirement of Burrito, Reusse, and soup-can wouldn't solve.

Munch, I believe he was referring to the fact that we have not yet finished our third year since we haven't played our bowl game.

To the OP's question. I have been thinking about this as well. People are very easily swayed.

"Well if Tiger Woods drives a Buick, then I want one too!"
"What? Mike Golic lost weight with Nutrisystem!? I love Mike Golic!"

If you grow up here (which I Did) I rarely ever heard anything positive about Gopher athletics, with the exception of maybe hockey and the Final Four run with Clem. Our media loves taking pot shots, that's their schtick, and really don't care whether or not the U is successful because its better for their jobs if they suck. If Dan Barriero tells me that Tim Brewster is an idiot, well then he is. Average people really don't know any better to judge for themselves. It just permeates our little TC culture to the point that it's amazing your Rashede's and Matt Garin's are even interested in staying. If all you hear in your youth is how lame the U is, why not try Notre Dame or UW? Am I going to have to wait for these personalities to move or die off before this changes? I'm not sure, but it sure would be nice to have a few more Shama's runnin around.

Those pro sports in town

In my opinion, the Gophers are the victim of having four semi-competitive (Twins) to mediocre (Vikings and Wild) to bad (Wolves) pro teams in town. The media has long since become jaded and cynical about sports, and that is the attitude the bring to the Gopher football team.

Instead of greeting Brewster as a positive, a breath of fresh air, as he would have been greeted in Ames, Iowa City, Lincoln or other towns with no pro teams, he was treated with a "show me" attitude. When he said his goal is to win the Rose Bowl - something that anyone with a brain would know was not attainable until he upgraded the talent, a 3 to 4 year project - they criticized him for not winning it the first year.

I'm fed up with the attitude from the so-called professionals in the media - but what can you do? Ignore it as much as possible. :(

Shaver on 11 tonight ripped Brewster to shreads about the Kansas thing and the recruits leaving bs.....of course he misconsued a ton of actual facts, but you know why eve try when noone cares about facts.

howeda7 i believe you are either fat pat, loogie or souhan with your dislike for brewster. blowing hot air? what was he suppose to say? that he inheritated a bad team and its going to take years before we even sniff the rose bowl? he was hired to bring in talent and drum up interest in our program and he has done that

i dont read souhan and fat pat articles because, to me, they are worthless. i dont listen to KFAN for the same reasons and shaver is an idiot along the same lines of the two morons at trib. also,i cant stand paul allen. he is a joke

Did anyone catch Tom Powers article on the pioneer press? His article is about Brewster could be fired after the insight bowl because mason was fired after the insight bowl. It also makes an imaginary riff between Brewster and Maturi. Why do they write this negative Bull crap based on absolutely no facts? Can't they write a nice article about the bowl game? why dump on the program at every opportunity? I hate this towns sports media.

He would never have even been considered for an interview in Iowa City or Lincoln, sorry. A coach at either one of those programs is under way more scrutiny and a "show me" now attitude than here.
