Tell me what is wrong with this statement:

If I were SH and I was going to sign at Minnesota, I would have signed early and tried to convince other 4 and 5 star recruits to join me.

Now let me respond to two answers:

1. "You're a Troll!" -- No, I am a die hard gopher fan.
2. "You don't know what you're talking about!" -- Correct! I don't. That's why I'm asking the question.

That is certainly one school of thought.

The other could be that Minnesota would get a huge publicity boost from having the #1 recruit sign during a major press conference on signing day, when everyone is paying attention. I guess you could look at it as forfeiting short-term gains in the interest of increased interest over the long term. Which one is right? I don't know if it's possible to say.

It could truly be that he just hasn't made up his mind yet. I don't think that's the case, but if true, it would render this timing discussion moot.

I dunno. I get the idea, but it really only makes sense if he is 100% sold on MN. If he is trying to review his options fully (which certainly seems to be the case) then the benefits of getting some other big recruits to MN with you is likely outweighed by the fact that you wouldn't be taking other visits (since he and his fam have proved to classy to go the "soft verbal that takes more visits" route).

Life is not as simple as your scenario.

I suspect SH, like most humans with options in a decision, goes back and forth.

If he comes here, great. If he goes elsewhere, good for him- I will cheer him on. He has really been a great model for future top recruits.

You could say the same thing about South Central LA and the USC Trojans. The advantages of early commitment vs. late commitment has absolutely nothing to do with how far away from home the school is.

It's a reasonable position and some do that. The other route is if you're not 100% sure why not visit other parts of the country and see what those programs are about. Then when you commit, it's as informed a decision as you can make.

Most of us did that anyway, it's just that we paid for it ourselves!

It's quite common for top-20 national recruits to wait longer (if not all the way to signing day). They have spots held/guaranteed for them at their top choice schools, and they don't have to commit early in order to get a scholarship.

Had he committed to us early he wouldn't be the #1 ranked recruit.

Or can I not say that?
