I cannot fathom how Maturi would be allowed to make this hire and then chose his close friend who also happens to coach for our most bitter rival. Under different circumstances, Chryst might be OK. But Joel is hanging by a thread, would probably have been fired if not for Bruinicks leaving and we're going to allow him to do this?

It was made clear we wanted a big name. It was made clear we wanted an experienced head coach. Chryst is neither. His lead qualifications are he's Joel's buddy and he's a Badger. I'm sure he's a fine OC, but there's zero to suggest he can be HC. Maturi should not be allowed to do this. Period.

so

you mentioned "bitter rival" and "Badger". These are your biggest arguments against?

Really not much of an argument.

It's a valid reason. So is ZERO HC experience, which we stated was #1 priority this time. And status as close buddy of Joel just makes it smell that much worse.

I'd say if he's Joel's buddy then there would be a strong argument against hiring him.

Don't forget President B had a much bigger hand in this search than the last.

How about raising expectations of hiring a proven winner?
How about treating our program as a fall back position for his friends in Madison?

The fact that he and Maturi are buddy/buddy makes it a hire that CANNOT Happen. It will be destroyed from day one. Most other coaches will at least be given a chance.

The rival thing should actually be a perk if he is really a good coach (which he seems to be).

The lack of experience, that's a little concerning.

Could be somewhat of a conflict of interest there, but I doubt that Chryst's 'lead qualifications are he's Joel's buddy and he's a Badger'. I mean look at the way Sconnie's offense is just rolling, and it seems like this guy probably does have some kind of qualifications for something. He's turned that thing into a machine-like offense and he deserves the credit for that.

I wouldn't be thrilled with him because he's totally unproven as a head coach, but I'm not gonna go jumping off a bridge either if we were to hire him. I prefer to wait and see what happens, as opposed to flipping my lid and just needlessly freaking out over something I have absolutely no control over.

see it as a perk too.

how is if hired the OC from a team that is going to the Rose Bowl, a team that is your bitter rival and now is your head coach a bad thing?

Because Joel has done nothing to put himself in a position where he should be allowed to hire his family friend for one of the 3 most important positions at the U. If Gordon Gee wanted to hire Michigan's OC to be head coach, that would be one thing (though I imagine many OSU fans would find it unacceptable).

But under these circumstances, having already screwed up the last hire. Having stated you want a 'Tubby-Smith like' hire. Having stated HC experience was a must. To then turn around and hire your buddy, who's a Badger with zero HC experience is just unacceptable. It's a sign that the folks in charge, from Bruinicks on down are either inept or no longer care. In which case I don't either.

we have no idea how the search went or is going. Maturi could have tried all options and was turned down and don't bring up Leach he probably was never really considered. we may never know. it could just be if hired Chryst was the best option available to Maturi.

It's fairly well accepted that Shannon would have taken the job. I'd 1000x rather have him then Chryst. I think it's likely that Fulmer would have taken the job. I'd 1000x rather have him then Chryst. We KNOW Horton would have taken the job. I'd rather have him then Chryst too. The idea that 'we had to take him, we couldn't get anyone else' won't fly. If Chryst is hired, the U actually let Joel fix the huge mess he made by hiring his no-experience Badger Buddy. There's no way around it.
